Being in the automotive paint industry for the last 25 years, I can tell everyone that there is no difference is paint on a Maverick or Corvette or a Bentley. Now BMW a few years ago tired to use a Clear Coat that PPG ahead designed for the New York Subway system. It was to make removal of graffiti easier, ( It didn’t work) but BMW thought maybe the higher mil thickness of it would stops chips on the front. Guess what It didnt work for that either. A rock bouncing down the road hitting the front of your car with chip any paint on the market. As for the paint protection film that 3M and other company’s have yes it helps with chips but if you ever have to have your car painted you will pay to have it taken off and it’s not cheap. Most shops charge around 10 to 12 hours labor to remove. That’s at 50 dollars a hour. The only way to stop rock chips is to not drive. For those who have Mav's, how is your paint holding up? Specifically on the front bumper/grill area , hood and front quarter panels?
I ask because last year I read threads from people saying the paint was "soft" (lack of a better word) and had taken some hits from road debris, pebbles, etc and it had done a number on the aesthetics of the paint job. Some people suggested those aftermarket clear coat protection films but those cost $1,500 a front side of the vehicle....costly but necessary?
Thanks for your input!
