I just unclipped and checked mine, nothing at all. I do have mud flaps.
But there might be other reasons it gets up under there.

Op,
Do you drive in muddy water ? Or off the pavement?

I personally think Ford leaves All those cavities and places MABETT makes covers for on purpose.
To cause our trucks to die sooner.
Best way to sell more of a thing is to build it with a short service life.

My older Rangers and F-150’s never had places like that with plastic covers hiding cavities that harbor corrosive road salts, sand and rotten organic matter.

Best get on the Tree of Woe and contemplate this people.

Ford wants to lower parts counts.
And this is a perfect reason to do that.
I'm resigned to the fact that the Mav is a truck and like all trucks will rust out faster than a sedan or SUV.

Not me. I clean it every day and wax it every Sunday. It must look like the day it rolled off the assembly line forever. After all it is a luxury vehicle that cost 6 figures. Wait, never mind 🤣 .

Yeah, I recommend those Maxzina (or Mabett) inserts for the cowl. They're not perfect, but they do stop most of the leaves from getting in there. Anyone that doesn't have the ability to park indoors and can't avoid parking under trees should definitely consider cleaning out that area on a regular basis, and hopefully that will reduce the need to pull the rockers apart.:

Just ordered the Mabett's. Thanks..

Yesterday when I came upon this thread. I thought I would shoot a couple pictures.
I never realized how huge the cowl area is.

For some these may help keeping debris out of the rocker and fender area.

To your question-- I rarely drive offroad. But the debris is clearly coming from above. I just ordered the guards. The "Mabett hood water barrier"

This is not a conspiracy, it is just not as well thought out as you may think. When engineers design cars, it's just not possible to consider 100% of everything. They are under pressure to get the parts released on time, at cost, etc, and they have their hands full just getting the parts to assemble and perform their main function properly. These days there are a lot fewer engineers than there were in the past. A lot fewer. I saw it happen from the 1990's to the 2020's. There used to be an army of people and now it's a skelton crew comparatively. It's not rocket science. It. Just. Happens.

Yeah because they can’t think things through.
Or wont.
I’m no designer nor engineer.
One of the first things I noticed on my first walk around was all the shit clipped on low all the way around the vehicle.
My first thought was, that will fill up with pebbles,
It does.
Second thought, that will tear up,
And that will increase drag, no biggie but still.

The Maverick is great but a lower underbody parts count would have been wise and efficient.
