Well - to some extent we all know there has always been a very known sequencing of brake on, ignition Start, turn gear shift, release brake.Happened again to me, found my way out after a few attempts, but it shoudn't require some secret sequencing of ignition, braking, touch pressure on the gear shift, etc.
That better not be a secret to a driver.
And most drivers learn if steering wheel was cocked and got locked, that may prevent a step in there until held off the stop.
Nothing changed on this truck regarding all those things.
And the fact there are sensors & switches to verify those steps is nothing new either - they or the wiring could always flake out.
What modern vehicles add is the sensors going to a computer module that controls the switch. And it does other things with that knowledge.
And the sensor/switch/relay/wiring may be just fine - but the computer flaked out.
Sooner that is recognized - sooner someone may notice details of the steps that make it happen - that can be duplicated by a tech. That's almost required.
Just in case it's not the computer itself.
Which can happen.
