I never drive in fog and rarely after dark - so my nifty OEM LED fog lights are never being used.

Turns out that Amber fog lights work better in dust & dust storms than White LED. There are occasional dust storms, even Haboobs where I drive.

In addition, trucks driving during the day are allowed to have Amber fog lights here in Arizona. Ok to use during clear days. Turns out Big Trucks are legally required to use front Amber lights 24/7. Safety issue…

So I have some Amber stick-on fog light tape on order arriving tomorrow. Will post pics after I shape & apply them:)

The "fog lights" are a misnomer. They are actually driving lights. They widen the light beam when driving with the low beams.
They work well on a narrow back road with minimal lighting.
They turn off when the high beams are in use.

The specialized design of fog lights means they are highly effective in specific conditions but can become a nuisance when used improperly. When visibility is clear, the wide, low beam pattern projects light sideways across the road, which can create a dazzling or glaring effect for oncoming drivers. Because the light is not directed straight ahead like a standard low beam, the wide spread can be irritating to other motorists, especially when the vehicle is traversing curves or bumps.

Misuse is often regulated by local statutes, which generally mandate that fog lights be used only when visibility is seriously reduced due to weather conditions. Many states in the U.S. require that fog lights be turned off when visibility is adequate, with some defining this as visibility extending beyond 1,000 feet. The driver’s obligation is to ensure that their lighting does not impair the vision of others, and failing to switch off the auxiliary lights when weather improves can result in a traffic citation.

Thank you & AI for the heads up!

However, I am going to repurpose my never used White LED fog lights into Amber DRL’s. Amber DRL’s are not uncommon where I live. You’ll probably notice them if you look:)

I may have to double up on the Amber tape and also plan to cover with max dark window tint since I prefer the “murdered” look when parked:)

I’ll post pics - hope you/AI approve!

It's my understanding from research and my own experience that driving lights project more of a pencil thin light beam in order to illuminate the roadway past the capability of normal headlamps. Fog lights are designed to widen the lighting pattern in an arc illuminating the near front and sides of the road.

The Amber tape can be peeled off I’m sure - hopefully easily! Don’t want to be fumbling around if I find myself driving though the California central valley in tule fog!

No, of course not. Just wondering how easy it might be to switch from amber to white and back again if needed. My lights came with snap in amber lenses and are simple to remove and re-install. Might be something like that available for your lights. I know you're not referring to the same type of lights. Purpose of posting the link is to give you a better idea of what I'm talking about.

My fog lights are Ford OEM. No Amber covers sized to fit them. Would have been too pricey if they did I bet!

Probably. I don't know what yours look like, but you'd be surprised what you can find on eBay.

This is what the OEM Ford Lobo fog light looks like fyi. Not a complete rectangle - will make it a bit more “fun” to cut the adhesive tape:)

I saw a multitude of amber lens covers on eBay, but nothing for yours. I've heard the tape works well, so looks like that's your only choice, Should be ok. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
