Turned cold here and my 13 mph thunk when slowing down seems to have disappeared on AWD Maverick

I'm in northwest Indiana, and the same thing happened to my 24 awd ecoboost. 13mph clunk is gone since it got cold.
My 24 2.0 did the same thing. Yesterday 33 degrees and thumping every time. Today 33 degrees and no thump at all. Guess I'll cancel my ford appt.. Bet they can't answer that.

So I've had this 13 mph thunk, clunk or thud noise when slowing down on my 25 AWD Hybrid Maverick for many months now but as it has turned colder here in Michigan (let's say around the freezing mark) my 13 mph thunk has disappeared completely. Not sure what to make of it as it surely can't be a coincidence that it disappeared as the temperature dropped. I drove it four or five times last week during the cold and it didn't make the thunk noise once. Just curious if anyone else who has the 13 mph thunk has noticed their noise disappearing if you are in an area where it has turned cold?

As a refresher and to those new here below are some links to a couple of threads where we talk about the 13 mph thunk:

2024 Lariat eco. 56 degrees one day, no clunk at all. Next 2 days upper 20's low 30's.
, clunk everytime at 12-13 mph.

I would not be surprised if someone with Forscan Lite at minimum, searching for PID's with temp in the description - found one in the PCM or related to a cut-off temp that the AWD is engaged at.

Wondering if when it's colder - it engages at higher speed - so instead of 13 mph thunk - it's 25 or 30 and just harder to hear/feel with extra tire/wind noise or road feedback higher.

Since that one video says temp is a factor in the decision - makes sense to have AWD available if colder at higher speeds when coasting down.

OP here and another big warm up (at least for a day) here in MI as we hit mid 50's here today and of course my 13mph clunk was back like clockwork. I'm wondering if this has something to do with the weather causing expansion and contraction of some part or mechanism that engages the AWD at around the 13mph when slowing down? It's almost like when the weather is warmer something expands and and causes this clunking as it no longer clears some other part? And when it colds (around freezing) it's causing something to contract and it doesn't have an issue clearing thus no clunk. I could be way off on this but just throwing it out as a theory...

When I told a mechanic (in another automotive field) about mine doing this, he said it sounds like the fluid getting thicker or thinner.

The fluid getting thicker or thinner may be the issue too. It's interesting that not everyone with an AWD Maverick has the 13 mph thunk but maybe the fluid is only affected by cold weather therefore people with AWD Mav's that live in a warmer climate never have issues? Could very well be so something else to ponder I guess:)

I live in Puerto Rico and also my 22 Maverick Fx4 4k has that noise. I don't think that's related to temperature.

Very interesting and thanks for the reply. Just curious if you bought your Maverick new? Also has it always had the 13 mph thunk when slowing down or did it start happening after a certain period of ownership?

Yes, I bought it new and this is the second RDU it has. The RDU that came from the factory started making noise when it was turning and was replaced at around 12k miles. Currently, the pickup has 22k miles on it, and both RDUs have done the same (the 13mph thunk). Interesting that both units have started to make noise at about 8k miles.

So when it was colder - did anyone do coast down tests HIGHER than say 15 mph?

To see if AWD engaged at higher than 13 mph when colder out?

Again - when the AWD is engaged uses temp as one of the sensor values. There is a video up-thread with comments from Ford engineer on the matter.

So the fact the 13 mph clunk went away when colder - or did it actually clunk at higher speeds and just not noticed that a longer coast down already had AWD engaged?

No one has the visual available anymore to confirm, right?
