Me too! Definitely a time machine.
It'll be interesting to see if Subaru brings it back due to the popularity that the Maverick and Santa Cruz have. The Subaru Baja was possibly the OG of the unibody compact truck car combo, but was too soon for the desired market at the time I guess.

That was Subaru’s 2nd try. The Brat had 2 seats in the bed. A 3rd attempted would take “guts”!

Several MTC members are in locations with many choices in compact trucks. In my case, the Mav was not a choice here. After looking at all the world has to offer, it was worth buying the Maverick from the USA and putting it in a container for its long boat ride home. There really is no competition out there. Maybe the single cab VW would have a limited target audience.

In the 80's rode with my 1st. wife, in the bed my buddy's yellow/white brat, before he sold it. His girlfriend got shotgun.

Be interesting if they could make a crew cab where you can collapse the rear seats and lay down the panel between the back of the seats and the bed to get another couple of feet of bed storage.

Yep, already done but I forget the make. It was an off the wall name trying to get into the market. A little tiny death trap of a vehicle.

Take a look at the Renault Oroch

A friend drives one (I think 2023 which may be a Duster). That’s how I learned swear words in Dutch! I test drove a new 2024 and it was not built well. I guess 2025s broke the 150bhp ceiling. I’m so glad I didn’t buy that Renault Fuego back in the day… even at 40% off. If I bought here, I would have had to jump to a Ranger (Amarok) or Honda and avoid some streets in town.

I owned a 2004 Grey/Silver (traded)and a 2006 Blue Baja (totaled).
They had a pass through into the rear fold down seats.
It could carry a lot, and mine did.
I liked them a lot, but the Maverick is a better vehicle IMHO.

The back seats mounted in the bed of the Brat was to avoid the dreaded "Chicken Tax" levied on trucks imported into the US market.

Oh yeah....When I was in my 20's, a buddy had a Brat that he used to just mercilessly beat on daily....I was amazed at the abuse that little beast took.
