My Mav gets 40+ MPG around town and I can't complain. I had to drive to San Antonio from Georgetown a couple of weeks ago to deliver a package (about 120 miles). On the way down at freeway speeds (70-75) I got about 38 MPG. Due to traffic congestion, on the way back I traversed Toll 130 from I-10 to Georgetown (those in central Texas know this well). For those unfamiliar with speed limits around the country, it's 85 MPH on 130 from I-10 for about 20 miles until it slows down to 80 MPH until reaching the end in Georgetown. A cold front had moved through and the headwind was about 20 MPH while driving back. So, 85 MPH into a 20 MPH headwind was pretty brutal.

To make a long story short, I averaged 20 MPG while driving 85 MPH heading home. And, the hybrid powertrain survived. The meager 14 gallon gas tank is not made for such conditions, however. I still keep a 2 gallon reserve tank in the bed even though it's a hybrid. There are a lot of stretches of road around here that don't have a gas station every 10 miles.

I hate taking gas cans to get filled. Remember very clearly show showing every gallon of gas is equivalent to 10 to 14 sticks of dynamite. The film showed it exploding on impact. Maybe just maybe an alternative is to slow down 70-75 mph? Just saying.

In Texas?!? He'd be very unpopular (and unsafe) as a clog in a route that everyone takes BECAUSE of faster speeds and transit times. If slower is the best answer, stay on I-35 and off of the express toll routes. If speed and time is more important, carry extra fuel if needed....

To the OP, thanks for the planning metrics. Good to know!

The other thing to remember here is that you most likely actually have enough useable gas in your tank for that real emergency. In the hybrid when your DTE reads 0, there is still over 50 miles of useable range. Especially if your trying to make the most of it. I'd rather take that chance than carry extra gas.

My experience is that there is about a gallon of gas left in the tank when the dashboard says you have close to zero miles to go.

In mine there is 2 gallons past 0 miles remaining. But this CAN vary based on slope, etc. and maybe individual vehicles vary a little.

You can bet the ranch on 1 gallon left.
Most of the time you'll have two gallons.
Sometimes more.

The only reason I bought the hybrid was that it's flat towable behind our RV. I reget making the purchase. Crazy time consuming towing instructions with no explanation as to why. Poor manual. Wish they still had the Couier with a manual.
