So I've had this 13 mph thunk, clunk or thud noise when slowing down on my 25 AWD Hybrid Maverick for many months now but as it has turned colder here in Michigan (let's say around the freezing mark) my 13 mph thunk has disappeared completely. Not sure what to make of it as it surely can't be a coincidence that it disappeared as the temperature dropped. I drove it four or five times last week during the cold and it didn't make the thunk noise once. Just curious if anyone else who has the 13 mph thunk has noticed their noise disappearing if you are in an area where it has turned cold?

As a refresher and to those new here below are some links to a couple of threads where we talk about the 13 mph thunk:

I'm in northwest Indiana, and the same thing happened to my 24 awd ecoboost. 13mph clunk is gone since it got cold.

I'm not sure what it being cold out has to do with the thunk going away but surely it must point to something. Has your truck been clunking consistently for awhile now? Mine has been for months although it didn't do it for the first couple of months of ownership - I bought it new.

Mine has been noticeable since about 2k. It's only at 6k and 1 year old now.

Sounds very similar to my situation. Truck didn't clunk from new and then consistently clunked after a few thousand miles but now that it's turned cold here in MI and IN and clunk has magically disappeared. That has to be a clue so hopefully someone else with more knowledge than me sees this and can shed some light on what it could mean.

Does the Mav EB transmission torque converter lockup disengage at that speed?
Maybe a rubber isolation mount has stiffened up?

I'll have to take my 2025 AWD Hybrid for a ride in the next day or so to see if the clunk is gone in ours. Started noticing it around 3000 miles now at 4500 miles. Turn off traction control and clunk is gone.

In your cases where the thunk is gone; are you also driving on slick surfaces? Could be the AWD is already engaged. (That thunk is thought to be the AWD engaging as you slow back to parking lot speeds.)

No slick road driving for me. The times I've been out the last week in the cold the roads have been clear and not slippery at all.

Video made and posted by one of our members last month, of the driveshaft engaging and disengaging at 13mph.

Yes the video that @MarkLally filmed is a great video and also very informative as to how the Maverick AWD system works. The good news was that I didn't hear any thunking or clunking during the video that many of us AWD owner's are experiencing. I drove my truck again today and it's a little below freezing again here today and no thunking or clunking whatsoever again so it's very interesting to me that the cold seems to have an effect on whatever is clunking on the AWD system on certain AWD when the AWD system engages at around that magical 13 mph mark. Is the cold causing something to contract and not catch on engagement of the AWD system? Does it have something to do with the temp of the fluid in the RDU? I have no idea but this all points to something with outdoor temperature playing a factor.

Hopefully someone will come along who better understands the ins and outs of the Maverick AWD and why the clunk seems to disappear after the weather turned cold. It's also interesting that if we turn off the traction control that the clunk disappears as well (and that's even in warmer temps).

We know of a few folks that had their RDU (rear drive unit) replaced as it was thought that it was causing the thunk but it proved to be a temporary fix that came back within a few thousand miles. Also it's curious that those of us that have thunk didn't seem to have it for the first few months or few thousand miles when the trucks were purchased new. The noise developed later on but why? With my truck the weather was warmer when the thunk first manifested compared to when I purchased the truck in the spring. Putting all of this together I'm not sure what it means exactly but with enough of us having the thunk under the same conditions, etc it has to point to something?

I've never had the 13 mph thunk but have a clicking noise in the dash that started in the cold weather and gets quieter as the cabin gets hotter inside.

Just wanted to give a little update. It warmed up here in my part of Michigan the last two days (Wed and Thur). Wed was low 40's and Thur I think it hit 50. I drove my 25 AWD Hybrid on both days and it thunked constantly at the 13 mph mark every time I crossed that threshold. So it seems as though when it's around freezing and below the thunk is gone. When it's warmer (mid to upper 30's +) it seems the thunk comes back. Also as we know when we turn off the traction control the thunk is gone as well.

So my conclusion is that temperature absolutely plays a role in whether the 13 mph thunk is present or not. To me that would point to something contracting when the temperature is around freezing or below and thus not coming into contact or interfering with something as the AWD system in engaging at the 13 mph mark. That's at least what I'm thinking as I don't think sort of lubricating fluid that's present in any part of the AWD system would have issues in the cold whereas the fluid itself would somehow cause this thunking noise.

Wondering if @Ianrmcdonald84 has noticed the same thing if the temp warmed up? What about @rgmiller32 have you noticed anything with the clunking and the changing of the outside temps?

Anyone else noticing this?

I drove yesterday with the warmer weather in WNY and the thump noise was back. Turned off the traction control and noise was gone. Should have colder weather again this weekend and will see what happens.
