It will be interesting to see if the bare bones Slate comes to market with the bring your own tablet/phone infotaintment concept. I believe they will still have some means to attempt to mine and monetize your data.
I think the Slate would HAVE to incorporate data-mining in order to compensate for the proposed low cost (which went from $18k to near $30k in less than a year, thanks to exponentially failing Merkun economy and dollar value). The $100 in mfg cost they save would not eclipse the thousand+ they would make selling data and "services".

On on hand it's regressive since automakers have historically been terrible at doing infotainment, but on the other, big tech (Google and Apple in this case) don't have your interest in mind either. In fact, quite the opposite.

So... if oil company execs give lots of money to someone/something and then the "EV agenda" goes away... how does that fit in to your views?
Limiting the range of personal transportation is one of the easiest ways to keep the population tethered to certain areas and away from others. You draw a 500 mile circle ā• around all commercial charging stations. Look for the areas that don't overlap. You won't find many EV.
I have 3 ATV gas cans, I strap in the bed of my Maverick for my machines. That would give me almost 500 miles of extra range.
I enjoy the freedom of being able to travel away from the tethered bunch.

Nothing is done overtly. The citizens would complain to much.
A good example of long term gradual control of what is the end game.
Good or bad.
Is the seat belt law. It may take 20 years or more but essentially.......

The powers that be will get what they want.
And if you don't think that the Auto industry doesn't have any outside influence over it your naive.
They didn't just decide one day that electric vehicles were the way to go.

Not to mention the fact that if I've got money $$$ in my pocket I'm always able to buy gas from someone.

You represent an increasingly small percent of the population that regularly roams around long distances, for leisure I assume. Most people just just drive to work and occasionally out of town for a day trip, or they have a two car situation where an EV slots in better if they have a gas vehicle for longer travel. Most people frankly just need, or at least should be buying the cheapest A to B car.

I guess unlike the picture below I don't like following everyone else.
Or being lead around.

You may or may not have read that GM has gotten rid of Apple CarPlay and android auto in their Chevy line. I’m not sure about the other lines but I definitely know Chevy was affected. So I read an article this morning when I was eating breakfast that stated that Ford, Toyota, and Volvo are shortly to follow. The entire premise is that they are developing their own software within the vehicle to use. I’m not sure if that is a good idea. Many people like myself love Apple CarPlay. And there’s other people out there who like android auto. I’m not quite sure why you would chase people away getting rid of a feature that is so widely used and is beneficial. People like myself do not like to text and drive. There are some people out there that for some reason too, but I do not like to text and drive with my hands on the phone. I really enjoy CarPlay for the multitude of features that has whether it’s texting by voice, listening to music, using maps. Whatever it may be.

The question I have for you all is this. Is this a feature that you religiously use and would this be something that would affect your day-to-day life or is it something that you can deal without? Reading on the forums and reading from Chevy forums people have said hey all you have to do is buy an external Apple CarPlay screen. But for me that doesn’t seem conducive because now you’re spending money on an external stereo that you should not have to buy. I don’t see the benefit of this decision
My understanding is that apple and android auto use language that conflicts with normal industry standards causing software issues. I can understand this with apple because they use risc processors that operate on a different instruction set creating problems. but android auto doesn't it uses the same language.
My suspicion is that to eliminate the conflicts with risc processor language they decided to drop both and provide their own proprietary replacement resolving software conflicts

Ford, Toyota and Volvo aren't dropping ACP. They did all reject ACP Ultra. Another useless clickbait initiated thread...

Definitely i’ll go get that article again and I’ll share it here. I’m glad to know that you have brought up the reference to the Ford CEO. Used to be an android guy and I’m not anti-android at all I mean there may be a potential I may go back there again one day but the point is I use this religiously on the road. Always using it for music or navigation or questions or any of that stuff. So Apple CarPlay is critical for me just like android auto is critical for you.

And I can understand the mentality of having control over other people but I don’t understand why companies would not want to gain more sales. To me and maybe it’s just me but I feel like keeping features like android auto or Apple CarPlay in your vehicle would bring people more to that brand now I’m not saying that it guarantees a sale but when you take something away from somebody that lessons the opportunity you have of getting said sale

I am looking back to find the article. I’ll find it in my viewing history.

But WHY would I start a thread asking about this topic if I didn’t read it?

Another self righteous Einstein who thinks he’s better than others

I use my CP religiously. I can’t be without music. I mean I’m listening to music as I write this

I use Android Auto all the time too. Actually been on the Android phone train since the original droid launched, and as soon as Pioneer launched an Android Auto head unit, I put one in my car (Cruze) since the Spotify native player had always been kinda fiddly. Literally used to run a private torrent site for obscure electronic music, so I know the struggle of trying to manage a 2.5" disk of FLAC files and such with no streaming interface.

I do feel strongly that we have entered a completely different phase with big tech though, and obviously automakers feel the same way if they are pivoting back from outsourcing infotainment to Apple and Google, even though it was cheaper, and consumers are going to hate it.

I believe the limiting factor will be how well backward compatibility is maintained. At some point the hardware in the vehicle will become obsolete.

They told me ā€œbut it has Spotify!ā€ That’s nice. I use Apple Music. It has Google!

I feel like keep it as an option. If people don’t want to use it, they don’t have to
