My conversation with the locksmith when I had a dumbkey made to hide under the pickup was that only Ford (well, a dealership that sells and services Fords; that's not the same thing...) can do the reprogramming stuff. UNLESS the place making the key pays a huge licensing fee to have access to the software to do the programming, and they have to not only do the keys, but also the pickup. I did not realize the key and keypad programming thing was such a big issue that Ford decided to vastly restrict the ability to do it. On my Transit(not Connect), I ordered a keypad for $75 and followed the instructions to program it to my van and keys myself. The same process was/is used for keyfobs for that era of Fords.Has anyone tried Car Keys Express? They are at a Costco near me this week.
Keys with transponder chips are equipped with radio frequency identification (RFID).
