Has anyone tried Car Keys Express? They are at a Costco near me this week.
Keys with transponder chips are equipped with radio frequency identification (RFID).
My conversation with the locksmith when I had a dumbkey made to hide under the pickup was that only Ford (well, a dealership that sells and services Fords; that's not the same thing...) can do the reprogramming stuff. UNLESS the place making the key pays a huge licensing fee to have access to the software to do the programming, and they have to not only do the keys, but also the pickup. I did not realize the key and keypad programming thing was such a big issue that Ford decided to vastly restrict the ability to do it. On my Transit(not Connect), I ordered a keypad for $75 and followed the instructions to program it to my van and keys myself. The same process was/is used for keyfobs for that era of Fords.

Actually these trucks (and other Fords too) have the means of adding up to 2 other keys by the owner.
Well - the wireless keypad may take a slot if you have it.

But yeah - as long as you buy the compatible fob and/or key with transponder - you can program the truck for your keyed or keyless entry.

Now - you lose a key or run out of slots - now you need Ford or someone you trust with the Forscan program.

The teenage thieves with their signal boost devices in their pocket can easily get into your truck if you leave the key unprotected in the house. With the Lariat the doorhandle sensor will just unlock the vehicle. Its an extra step on an XL or XLT without the intelligent access option, and they normally just break a window in the night to gain entry. Then, using a commonly-available blank keyfob, they can easily program it in the vehicle and drive off. You're short a truck in less than 5 minutes.
Making the blank keyfobs impossible to obtain seems like a smart basic-security move. Making it so that there is no reprogramming possible in the vehicle and only a dealer can program it seems like an even better move.

please share this hidden info on how to add a keypad yourself. I searched the internet using all the words and phrases I could think of, and both Ford and locksmith confirmed it cannot be done without special proprietary software.

I keep my spare fob in a faraday bag hidden in my garage. I don't really see a need to an extra set in the truck as my main set has an apple air tag attached and I can usually use the app to open the doors (now that the deep sleep issues have been delt with) if needed.

I like to double lock the truck just in case it does keep the electrical use to a minimum while parked. I like having the spare set close to the truck so I can access it without going upstairs to get the main set.

Ford sells the wireless keypad option as a dealer-installed item. In 22 and 23 the keypad option was wired in. Starting in 24 they switched to a wireless unit with a 10-year battery in it, eliminating that extra wiring. Its pretty cheap, and comes with instructions for how to install it yourself.

Get a locksmith to make you a metal fob-less key. Also known as a test key. They fit in a magnetic Hide-a-Key box. Of course this will not start the truck, but it'll let you get back in if you accidentally lock the fob key in the truck.

I opened the tailgate and stuck the box at the base of the tailgate down out of view.
Just pull the key out of your fob and hide that!
Cost=Zero dinero :’P

You don’t need to hide your key fob, if you have your phone on you like most people,it opens my doors just fine.
I take long bike rides from a parking lot - as a longtime Ford owner, I left the fob in the truck, used Fordpass to lock up and rode.

I returned in 97F heat (normal where I live), and .... nope. "Unlock failed." Several phone reboots later, the unlock finally worked (mind, this is in a suburban area with lots of cell coverage).

If you poke around the 'net, you'll find that Mavericks will occasionally go into "deep sleep mode," and won't promptly respond to FordPass signals.

I'd urge any and everyone to not make it your sole means of access to your car.

What about putting a magnetic key box in that huge space behind the rear wheel lol
