Hi everyone,
I am looking to tow a small camper with my 2024 tremor. I am looking at some campers that are within the 2000lb towing capacity but most of them still have electric brakes. I'm aware of all the potential issues of towing beyond the rated 2000lbs and don't want to get into a discussion about how I shouldn't be doing what I am doing (so lets all stay positive here lol).
Anyway I was looking at adding an aftermarket brake controller but I just can't get over how crappy they look and I would love to keep the truck looking as stock as possible. I do have the factory hitch and 4 way connector already and there is a trailer module installed from the factory behind the rear seat.
Looking into things on the Ford parts website comparing my vin with a vin from a factory 2024 XLT with the 4k package. The trailer module that is factoring installed in my truck is the same unit used in the 4k models with the trailer brake controller. I also compared the as build data from both vins and it looks like there are only a few lines that would need to be edited in Forscan.
As for pars I would need. I will need the actual brake switch in the dash, the trim to accept the switch (or I may 3d print a trim piece and cut a hole in the stock part not sure yet). I will then need the all the electrical pins to add to the factory connectors, and the 7 way plug to mount on the hitch.
I have been researching this a ton and reviewing the factory electrical schematics, manuals, and parts listings and this doesn't seem like a terribly hard modification. I also have been searching on multiple forums as well and haven't been able to find anyone who has done this. The only issue I am running into is ford doesn't sell the connector to plug into the dash mounted trailer brake switch. However they do list a part number for the pins in the connector. I may end up trying to find a connector I can cut out of a salvaged vehicle as it's the same connector used in the F series trucks or 3d print my own connector body not sure on this part yet.
If anyone has done this I am all ears and eyes open to any tips or advice. I will also follow up with pictures and information on the modification as I work through this so others may benefit from this as well.
Below I will attach some pictures of the schematics, my factory trailer module, and some of the parts I will need to acquire for this for reference.
