Hybrid Electric AC is nice!!

Spent the weekend at my son’s soccer tournament and we finally had sunny warm weather in Ohio.

The hybrids electric AC is so clutch in being able to keep the cabin cool without running the engine (much). Including the AC idle time and highway driving to the tournament I’m still showing 37.6mpg on the trip computer.

It uses a DC powered scroll compressor, which is not only efficient in operation but also durable (in theory).

Does the AC run off the hybrid battery and only start the engine when the battery is low, similar to how reversing works?

Yes, that's exactly how it is powered.
The compressor will also run at different speeds depending upon the load.
When the AC is trying to cool a 150° interior that compressor can be somewhat noisy. Especially noticeable if the engine isn't running. I've made a recording of the sound.

Yes.

It varies, but sitting in a parking lot in summer heat with electric A/C on, the gas engine runs less than half the time, to charge the HV battery (which runs the electric A/C).

In actual driving, the MPG hit from running the Hybrid's A/C is not even enough to worry about.

What does suck more gas is running the heater in city driving. That causes the gas engine to run, to provide waste heat for the cabin heater.

The third day I was parked under a tree and was shaded. Granted the AC working much less but I’d say the engine ran for 10 minutes total over about 3 hours.

The two other days out in the sun the engine was quickly on 4-5x an hour for a few minutes each time.

Unlike the EcoBoost with stop and start technology. Our Maverick hybrid air conditioners are fully operational at long stop lights, trains, road construction stoppages, ....
No matter how long we're stopped we still have ice cold AC.

So far the lowest fan speed on auto works for me!!

I think they are durable. Come to think of it, I can’t recall us replacing a compressor on a hybrid at our dealership
