Ordered Maverick last September, it was built in November, and I took delivery in January. I live in Michigan so we have snow storms. Road salt is applied. I get it washed including undercarriage after every major event. It stays in garage after every drive. It has 1200 miles on it. So why is my muffler and exhaust system extremely rusty with spit seams and leaking water?

Heated garage? A heated garage in those conditions is really hard on vehicles as it keeps all the salt chemically active, rather than frozen.

Nope, not even insulated. It is a defective exhaust system and under warranty (1200 miles) I’m taking it to another dealer in Midland, MI. My dealer here in Mt. Pleasant told me it isn’t their fault. Now that I have to travel for service, I’m selling the Maverick, and after I get it repaired, I’m selling it and buying a Honda Ridgeline.

I have a 22 Ecoboost Lariat with 15,000 miles. My muffler looks similar. I was considering trading to get a 2025 and would probably use the dealer in Mt. Pleasant as than is where I live, but now am reconsidering dealers and may even look at a different vehicle.

I have read that car washes use suds saver systems and these in areas with high road salt "Recycle " the salt. This has been shown in Canadian Provinces. If Automatic Car Washes still do this, this could account for the high level of rust.

The other issue is vehicles that put the muffler as far from the engine as possible have the mufflers running very cool. This would be much worse on a hybrid. The worst vehicles I remember from my days in a muffler shop were 80's and 90's Volvos and GM Novas. There were others but those were the worst. Muffler and resonators rust from the inside out due to condensation of exhaust gasses. The exterior rust has less effect on the life of the muffler than acidic condensate sitting inside the mufflers.

I really like the 2025, but I don’t like how the dealership responded when I told them the problem. I took it to Midland today and had it looked at. They are replacing the exhaust system. All I can say if you are looking for a new Maverick. Midland is worth the trip.

You may want to consider encapsulating the underside components with a product like Fluidfilm or Krown when they're new, especially if you aren't the one who's going to be working on the underside of it.

I think the Honda would rust even more. Exhaust systems are generally not painted, treated, or coated. Some have aluminized pipes or cases, but those too rust. Just a little slower at first. I wouldn't worry about it; just keep driving your Maverick. Enjoy it.

Mostly unrelated, but my exhaust on my 2015 F150 lasted 130K miles, and even then it was one piece w/a hole (I decided to replace everything back of the cat).

Glad to hear it worked out good for you

Wow this is disappointing

The entire exhaust system on my Acura MDX looks new after 200,000+ miles. Same on a 2002 Camry with 200,000+, there isn't a speck of rust on it and we get TONS of road salt. My old Accord's exhaust system and muffler was still rust-free when I sold it after 15+ years ... it got to the point where I was wondering why muffler shops still exist, but I guess this is the answer : American cars!

Salt remains chemically active even when it's freezing cold ... that's why it's used to melt ice
