I'm sure that would vary widely on use-case, but for me personally, there's a few things going on. 1. I don't currently have power in my garage. A PHEV would allow me to purchase now, and be ready for when I do. 2. I do a great majority of my driving locally, but I also very frequently make trips that are 200mi+ to visit family.

PHEV is a sweet spot for me because the majority of the time (when I have access) I'll be running as an EV, but when I need to make those super long trips, I don't have to stress over stopping and charging.

My brother in law has a tesla and I'm fairly certain my sister is going to arrange an accident on that thing with how many hoops they jump through to use it.

To be clear, I'm also not expecting my opinion to be the main or even majority. I'm obviously coming from a very specific set of scenarios. Like I said, an EV could be perfect for lots of people. Not me, though.
I have like 20 outlets in my garage, and 2 separate 20amp 110 outlets that I put in there, and never actually utilized them lol. if it would charge overnight, and be full on PHEV, id be totally all for it.

My old boss a few years back bought a used Tesla model S and took it on a vacation to San Diego from Phoenix. He about got divorced over the charging drama, LOL.

Or, you use an EV while in town. (Almost daily?)

And you use (rent/borrow?) a cheap, different liquid fueled vehicle for long trips. (Rarely?)

I can't even imagine a long trip like this. I've seen them go at it over a 200 mile round trip visit to my other sister's. I'm sure they love each other dearly, but hot-damn I spent a lot of time trying to manage their passive aggressive comments and redirect to the weather or something.

I guess I'm not super sure why you're fighting me on my own personal opinion of what ideal is.

To your point though, firstly, as I said, I don't have power in my garage currently. Secondly, I also don't see how renting/borrowing a car at least twice a month isn't a hassle worth justifying a different route.

I had a (cheap-ish $30k) Bolt EV for 6 years, 60,000 miles.

Very comfortable very pleasurable car. Very fun to drive. Much zoom-zoom. I used to say (back in 2017) it would out run anything not a Tesla. (Had good power to weight ratio and the great EV torque and acceleration.).

Charging in major cities was a breeze.
Never had range anxiety. Was a great daily driver. But did several 400 to 450 mile day trips.

As long as you are a normal human that eats lunch, the vehicle recharges while you comfortably dine-in.

I did not consider it an inconvenience.
I spent like 3 cents a mile for 60,000 miles. Zero fluid changes. One set of tires purchased.

damn, making me want an all EV maverick. I have my 2013 scion tc, which is reliable, could keep it for farther trips if felt the need for one.

I think EV make a lot of sense if you live along any coastline. Left, right, or bottom.

Rural middle, maybe not so much unless you are really into making it work. And you can.

My vote is for a PHEV instead of EV at least until they get better batteries, faster charging, and more infrastructure. Now that being said I don't know that I would pay 10k more for one.

So what I'm hearing is... you don't really understand EV's but are EV curious.

Now that would mainly work for me - maybe 3 trips a year to the Ozarks for winter camping.
1 summer road trip/vacation.
16 days of rental - $40-60 daily unless a discount is found.
Would have to throw that in with the potential EV savings to see if it really was in the long run.

But no garage for our slightly just long enough winters, would also cause the extra battery use for warming itself, which I know some newer sites that'll do the math for you include in the analysis for savings or not.
And we aren't expensive gas here, and less than 10K yearly even with long trips - prior analysis barely showed a savings for just the daily stuff.

Hmmm - have to find those sites again.

We go on road trips a lot and gas is just easier. PHEV is nice for work commute though.
Jacob,
Wouldn't it be nice to own one vehicle that you didn't need to buy gas for during the week, going back and forth to work, going grocery shopping. Then you when you wanted to take that occasional long trip. You didn't have to worry about charging stations or staying to a certain planned route that was accessible to charging stations. Sure you would have to buy gas at that point but one vehicle to do it all.

When I purchased my Chevy Volt in San Jose California. I made the trip back to Southern Nevada without ever stopping to plug in.
The EV Fanboys always resort to the 'If you're going to wait for charging you might as well get lunch.' It's as if they have totally forgotten people still eat in their cars while they're driving. The same folks like to gloss over the fact that, there are times that you may not be able to pull up to a charger. You may have to wait for that family to finish having lunch, even though their car is fully charged. Something that really doesn't happen at gas pumps.

It doesn't always have to be about the "fuel" costs. Example: in the peak of Covid I never went to a gas station.

It would. 12-14 hours on 110v was about average on our phevs. 1 had a 13 kwh battery and the other 15 kwh. I also installed a lv 2 charger which cuts it down to 2 hours. So when its warm out our around town driving was never with gas.
