This weekend, I ventured into central Washington with one of my partners on our way to the Ellensburg Rodeo. We took our hybrid Maverick and Roam Vagabond XL roof top tent to enjoy the views along the way.

First stop was a forest service road off of Rt. 2. Alas, the perfect spot was obstructed by a boulder and downed tree. Note to self: bring the reciprocating saw to do minor clearing to the best spots.

After turning around, the Mrs agreed to a beautiful spot overlooking a burned out canyon from a previous forest fire.

As the sun set, the stars shone through the light smoke in the air for a breathtaking view of the Milky Way, Sagittarius, and even the Andromeda Galaxy.

Day two started with bacon, eggs, and cabbage, then off to Leavenworth for a wander.

Next stop, Douglas Creek Canyon. We looked at the northern route, but it was meh with a water hazard I didn't want to drive through. We decided to try the southern entrance. Alas, we couldn't get far having only front wheel drive and standard tires, but I scouted and found the best spot.

With scouting done, it was time to get set up.

The second night did not disappoint as the stars danced above once more.

We even saw a few shooting stars.

With night gone again, it was time to say goodbye to the canyon.

Looks great. Only reason I would ever venture to the left coast is the scenery.

The views look amazing.

🤓 Those are some amazing pictures, thanks for sharing. Now all you need to do is fill Maverick with some coloring.

Always bring a chainsaw and tons of other tools (shovels, picks, axes) to clear a path when you are venturing out there like this. Same goes for self recovery tools, especially with your stock highway tires and FWD only with a weighted down truck.

This will be worth a planned trip!!!!
Which comet will be visible in 2024?

The most anticipated comet of the year is certainly Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, which might reach naked-eye visibility by October 2024. We're also keeping our fingers crossed for Comet C/2024 G3, which will possibly be visible in the daytime sky in January 2025.

New tires and recovery gear are both on my list of purchases before the fall rains. Trying to decide my next option for front recovery. If you have suggestions, I'm all for it! With the current setup, best I could do is a 10 degree incline on the Forest Service roads, and that required a head of steam.

As for tools, I'm not opposed to turning back when needed, but it is really nice to access those places where others don't. I'm going to think about that more.

The views are just the best. I grew up in Ohio and lived several other places with the military. Within a couple years of moving to Washington, I knew this was home. Love living in a country (and state) with so many options!

Saw, traction boards, GMRS radio (and the knowledge of how to use it), and a satellite communicator are key for me, especially in the fall and spring in Washington when trees are coming down from storms. Eastern Washington has lots of standing deadwood from fires, and it doesn't take much to bring it down. Luckily, the trees tend to be much smaller than those on the west side of the state...

Check out the Washington Off-road Recovery Network, just in case you get stuck and need help getting out. It's a great volunteer organization that will get you unstuck if need be.

And cya on the forest service roads. 😁

Do you white out your plate while driving also when thousands of people see it, or just in a forum where a couple hundred do?
I have a small fairy that flies inches in front of my license plates so bright and quickly that it causes those whiteouts. Really, it can't be helped. I tried to get rid of her with a fly swatter, but she got me back by buzzing in my ear all night for weeks.

@bgn had some great comments about gear. I have a Garmin setup that is satellite and will allow me to text and such too. But just keep it simple. I don't think you need to be told any of this and we just wanna see more pics and stories from you ;)

Have an awesome trip!
