Did an overload trip with the RTT setup on the new, much lower rack ($200! Amazon look up "TMS Truck rack"). The mount and the rest are DIY with hardware from HomeDepot. I think the rack itself is about 8" high, enough room to reach inside and grab stuff. And the top of the tent now sits almost flush with the roof, saving up about extra 3-4 MPGs compared to my previous much taller Yakima bed rack. Got about 27-28 overall from 400mile trip. Check out more pics of the set up here.

Awesome!! I've been out of camping for over 25 years. I used load my 78 CJ7 up like a pack mule and head to the mountains. I've been thinking about getting back into it and this type of setup looks really appealing. It looks a lot more streamline and easier to setup and take down. How does your pup getting up into the tent? Thanks for posting your pictures!

Haha I definitely have to carry her up the ladder yeah. I do take the tent off whenever I’m back in the city. With an extra pair of hands takes about 10mins to put it away. It does save up gas without the tent. I used to have a much higher rack but switched to a lower one so the tent stays almost flush with the roof line and that saves a lot of MPGs.

^ second that or even pictures of current rack setup. The Yakima stands way to tall and I like how your tent is roughly flush. Also link to tent?
Link to the rack here. I had the Yakima rack yeah it was too high making the RTT drag all the air on the highways so I switched to this much lower rack and the tent now sits almost flush with the roof. Quality wise it’s the same as the Yakima rack that costs about 4 times more.
