Hello! I don't know if any of you remember this build, but I had been posting videos here a while back. Life got pretty hairy and working on the camper became more therapeutic than hobby. I just didn't have the capacity to make videos there for a while but I'm ramping back into it. Here is the latest video and I'm stoked about it!

My camper battery (1kwh) tends to get drained in the winter, so I decided to add some solar to the roof. I thought about charging from the Maverick's system, but wanted to see how far I could get with solar alone. I would have to add a DCDC charge controller into the system, but in theory I should be able to draw a decent amount of current from the hybrid system as it is pulling from the hybrid battery / motor generators rather than from an alternator. I could probably get close to 500W or more... but I didn't want to impact the fuel economy more than I already have. I also don't want to run wire all the way from the 12V car battery to the bed of the truck if I don't have to.

This video is maybe more camper related than Maverick, but I think you'll love the next video as well. I have this rear-view camera system and I'm making it double as a backup camera by controlling it's angle remotely with an Arduino and a raspberry pi.

I'm also going to make a video soon touring the cabinetry I just finished and to show how I make use of the TINY camper space we have to work with in the Maverick lol I'm going to go use the camper this weekend, work on any improvements or implement any fun space-saving ideas I come up with, then make a video.

I'll also be making a full tour video soon! I wanted to wait until I finished the cabinetry before doing that. The camper is feeling nearly project complete which is so cool.

Let me know if there is anything you want to see in the next few weeks! Would love to chat about the build.

Good call on the solar! Plenty of unused surface area up there and it will absolutely come in handy when you're camping. Might even be worth adding another panel or two and you can really enjoy some off-grid electrical.

Glad to see you still working on it! I’ve been drawing up some plans on a camper myself and your pop up design is quite inspiring. I’m planning on a more aerodynamic approach myself (fuel efficiency is my biggest concern). But I love seeing all builds

Thanks for the post, looks very interesting and I'd be interested to see your wiring diagram, also a list of equipment you're using for the solar/power setup. I'm not sure what you mean "from an alternator" you have a hybrid, I thought the hybrids didn't have an alternator. I have an electronics background and also woudln't mind seeing what you did with the raspberry pi.

Sadly I think the weight will keep me at 1 panel. I have a feeling 200w will suffice as well but we'll see! I'm heading out for a trip now so I'll give updates. I thought about using the thin flexible panels but heard they are really poorly built and aren't very resilient especially for the price... but we'll see maybe I'll try one in the future in addition to the rigid.

I'd love to see your ideas/designs if you'd be willing to share! I'm curious to see how you're planning to make it more aerodynamic. I'm trying desperately to creep back up into the >30mpg range 😅 maybe I can use some of your ideas

I wish I had something more interesting to share with you but the panel is wired directly into the eco flow delta 2 battery. You're right I would be pulling from the battery and motor generator rather than an alternator.

I'd love to share the Pi/arduino stuff! Working on finishing that project up so I can make a video... currently struggling with WiFi connectivity and HTTP on the arduino. Still gotta get it wired up to power.

Thanks!! That's actually a huge compliment. after the last video I decided to try to level up the audio and got myself a lav mic. I'm glad it paid off!

Perhaps a boat tail on the back of the camper, like the ones sometimes seen on semis? That’s a lot of flat space on the back.

Great work, it's impressive to see what we can DIY when we set our minds on a goal. How weather-tight is it, do you have any leaks?

The only things I would've done differently would be to make the solar "extension cords" with 1 male and 1 female lug so you can't accidentally plug them in backwards. Also would've mounted the junction box inside to keep it away from the heat and elements

Solar is the way to go with boondocking. I have used it since 2018 on my 30ft class A. I am boondocking right now with a view of the Wrangel mountains. Currently my MPPT reports a 413w right now. I just used my Mr. Coffee to make coffee.

Ford Maverick I added solar to my DIY hard walled pop-up camper, and will be doing much more soon! 1756761822049-bz

haha idk if I'm that desperate yet. Just got like 33mpg on a road trip down 1.. that's pretty damn good.

Thanks! Agreed on the lugs. The junction box as as an extensible entry gland. There also isn't really room in the roof for all that stuff.

Awesome!! Yeah with this one panel I never dipped below 90% and was topped up to 100% within an hour of driving... crazy. And that was with some pretty nasty overcast by the coast. I could definitely increase my consumption and/or increase capacity comfortably with this one panel. I'd love to build out a DIY system with some >280AH LFP battery... but for now this ecoflow is doing quite well actually.
