Went to Illinois from Washington and back again (~4,000 mile round trip). The Maverick (hybrid) performed well. Around 32-33MPG with a lot of speeds of 65-85 MPH with tires at the stock 36PSI cold. I got to try some ethanol-free fuel but did not see a difference in the average fuel consumption (not hand calculated though). Though the Atkinson certainly does have a drone to it when cruising at speed the car is remarkably quiet for something built as a budget-minded vehicle. Even in the mountains I never felt the hybrid was lacking power though it does make a racket when passing. The lane centering assist was great on the long, straight stretches but annoying as ever on winding roads.
I did not take the easy route of using interstate 90 the whole way, once I hit Missoula I detoured to go through farmlands and Crow country on the outbound leg and took Rt 12 (again hopping on 90 at Missoula) on the way back just because I wanted to see a "lil bit" of America that I've always just flown over (footnote: there is an abundance of the Great Plains). I found the plains to be lonely and beautiful, had never been through any part of them before.
I did not see any Mavericks at all in the back country, not one! When I stopped people were doing double-takes and checking the Mav out.
I was pleasantly surprised by the long-term comfort of the seats despite my qualms about having the ActiveX - it wasn't as hot or sweaty as I thought it would be (though I still think I should get some sheepskin seat covers). I did get my shirt wet fueling up in the rain and ended up having to stop and change shirts because the ActiveX does not wick water at all. I forgot to wax the truck before I left but the bugs did wash right off.
I'm just about at 8200 miles now so I will do an oil change and the PTU and RDU as well.
I left the day my daughter went into labor with grandchild #4, the first boy. He has three older sisters so he's in for it.
