Window Tint Question

I was all ready to pull the trigger on window when I was provided some information that will more than double the cost of my tint job.
I called a reputable place thats been around for years got his quote, then I called another shop I have used before and he informed me that the factory tint on the rear side windows and back window were only tinted and gave no UV protection. So....is this true? Do I need a clear ceramic on rear side and back windows to get UV protection, or was shop number 2 blowing smoke.

Yes. The factory privacy glass is not UV or IR tint. You will need to do all windows if you want UV and IR protection.

The rear factory windows are dyed in the glass. Yes you will need to put tint on all the windows. I went with 35% ceramic tint on top of all the rear (dyed) windows. Then I put 20% on the front 2 windows. That pretty much matches all the way around. I also did the top of the windshield in 20% (should have done 5%) but that was all I had on hand at the time. The answer is yes AND no. Automotive glass does protect you from UVB but not UVA. The windshield (by law) does protect you from UVB and a good amount of protection from UVA. Regular window tint will filter both UVA and UVB. Ceramic tint will filter both UVA and UVB and in addition has poor thermal conductivity so you'll notice your vehicle is a bit cooler in the summer days.

I elected not to tint my rear windows just 20% on the front and 70% on the windshield - ceramic.

Two reasons:

1. Doing the 20% on the front was the closest to get them to match the rear windows
2. The back window is tiny and vertical and I didn't think I would need the ceramic protection for it or the rear windows.

I love the ceramic film and it definitely makes a difference with the cooler cabin in the dead of summer.

A study from the 2014 (I think) said that front windshield glass blocked 90% or more of UVA on the vehicles tested. This was published in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association). Here's the link to the JAMA Article.

3M Ceramic film will block over 99% of UVA & UVB, and nearly 70% of IR energy, regardless of the Visible Light Transmission film you choose.

The Maverick OEM windshield and front passenger windows are 70% VLT. The rear door windows & rear glass are 22% VLT.
