No chance in hell a RAV4 has better AWD than an Ascent's symmetric full-time AWD system.

Not sure how you're pulling your "snownuts" but RWD is the drivetrain you're looking for. Even with the "nannies" turned off it's just FWD, single wheel, and not that impressive for "snownuts"
With the Ascent's traction control off and the transmission in manual mode "1st gear" you can keep the revs up for great donuts. Same thing in my '16 CrossTrek...that was the best at snownuts! Manual transmission and minimal interference from the nannies was a great combo. 4wd donuts feel cool too! Lots of snownuts fun as a teen in my 2wd Dodge Dakota and later in my S-10. The RAV4 freaks out and cuts throttle as soon as you get any degree of sideways. Those Toyota lawyers had a lot of influence!

I guess we have different opinion of donuts, or rather really good ones. AWD in the subaru is drifting at best. RWD is where you can truly whip the rear around and have a good time.

It's all fun, no matter what you call it!

Im a rwd guy, and in snow i actually used to do icecapades level stunts in econoline vans. Like double 360s while travelling directionally through intersections at over 25mph actual speed(during anow emergencies when no one was out). One year i ended up in a 89 5spd beretta gt. I learned to just do everything i would in a rwd just in reverse. Spectacular stunts bouncing off the rev limiter, good fun.

The maverick i think with all the traction features off and in normal mode, it should do pretty good in reverse.

Econolines are great fun in the snow.

I grew up out outside of Cleveland. Starting with K-Cars in the 80s we'd be riding along a snow covered road and all of the sudden Dad pops the e-brake sending the car into drift while he then bounced the 2.6 "HEMI" off it's rev limited flinging the Reliant side to side as my Mom white knuckled whatever she could hold onto.

This continued with the Dodge Spirits...Stratus....Taurus.....

Haha Dad was a company man but damn did he get the most fun from those vehicles in the snow....

During the rare "snowmageddon" we had here in Texas a few years back (not to be confused with last year's "icemageddon"), I watched a guy trying to so donuts in the snow in a WalMart parking lot. Idiot forgot there were concrete "bumpers" in between the "lanes"... He (or she - never got close enough to know) managed to slide into one hard enough to break the suspension on that side...

As with all things "winter-related," we Texans suck at driving in snow/ice conditions – especially the 4WD never-been-off-the-road-in-it crowd...

After that same snow storm, I was creeping along in my Prius-C, barely finding enough traction to get down the road. One of those lifted 4WD SUVs came barreling up behind me on one of the straights. Guy was going WAY too fast for the conditions, and honked his horn as he flew by me on the left. A mile or so later, I passed him sitting in the far side of a ditch. There was a relatively sharp bend in the road, and he had slid right off the side of the road, bounced through bottom of the ditch, and up onto the other side. Guess he thought that 4WD would make his vehicle immune from the laws of physics... Nope!

Similar thing for folks in North Carolina (outside of the mountains - those folks are goats).

First winter I moved down there from Cleveland, OH and I had about a 30 minute drive to work through some winding foothills and then highway to work. We got maybe 2" of snow if that, most accumulation was from blown/drifting snow.

I lived up on one of those little foothills and I left that morning (had a 96 GMC Sonoma, WT, 4300 Vortec, 4x4) put the truck in 4H and went down my hill and the truck slid a little on me and the tail got a little loose (hadn't put any weight in the bed). No big deal, just take it nice and easy and as I'm getting ready to pull out onto the county road a lifted RAM 1500 comes flying up over the hill like its was on fire.

Turn left and start following him. about a mile or so up the road his RAM is just laying on its side in a ditch and he had just crawled out of it. Young kid, probably had never seen snow in his life.

Passed about a dozen more cars on my way to the office that morning. Got there. Not another single person in the building.

"Oh honey, bless your heart. We don't come into the office if they even predict snow. Safe travels home"

So true for Texas as well... If there was even a hint of frost on the road, my office would announce a "delayed opening" or just close altogether. Fortunately, they were also way ahead of the "working from home" trend, so it didn't affect me much.
