So I felt like I got lucky earlier this year -- after calling every dealer on the Eastern seaboard, a Pennsylvania dealership (I live in Virginia) called me and said they'd allow me to take-over an order somebody else had placed, but backed out of. They told me I would only have to pay $3K over MSRP, and other than having to be an AWD XLT, I could customize anything else I wanted. Since this got me my ideal pickup for ~$31K, I decided to sign the order form, as a $31K Colorado or Canyon is only going to give me a base/work-truck variant. The dealer said they expected the order to be scheduled in June, and I'd take possession in August.

Since then, there's been no update from Ford (I check in every 2 weeks), other than the recent note that my order is likely to slip into MY23, even though I don't have any of the features they claim to be causing their delays.

So I feel I'm in a pickle. I could simply ride this out, and let my order change to a MY23, and I *think* I'd be relatively towards the front of the line. *OR* ... I could cancel my order on 2 August, get my $500 deposit back, and place a new order with my local/Virginia dealer for the exact MY23 model I want -- this would be scrapping the AWD (I don't need it in my climate), and going back down to MSRP, rather than $3K over. Even if MY23 MSRP goes up ~$1K, I would expect this saves me ~$4K in total, but likely pushes me to the back of the MY23 order line.

What would you all do? I can afford to keep waiting, I have a 2014 Mustang in great working order ... but dang, I really want my truck already, and the thought of waiting until Spring 2023 to get it is depressing.

Why not do both? I would re-up the order in 23 and put a new order in with your local dealer and see which gets built first. Let the other one go or sell it yourself.

What do you get for the $4k over? Delivery some time in the future... Oct, Nov, Dec? 2023?
Pro - 1 - ahead of the line ... MAYBE
Pro - 2 ???
Con - $4k
Con - 4WD - lasts forever + 1mpg hit
I do not know that you are actually buying anything as if it slips to the 2023MY it will have a place in line, but, exactly how far ahead of a new
order is it?
How many orders are sitting on dealer OUT baskets awaiting the 8/2 or 8/15 open season? One day, zero on order, building out last years. Next day x,xxx on order? How big is x, or x,xxx ... or is it actually xxx?
Either way the long and short is that $4k buys you some advance in line, maybe, did you see a print of the order? Are you sure it is actually placed? Could it be a 'stock' order, and a little bit cusomized for you? No dealer I know of will place an order with the restriction it be '4WD' from the get-go. Is some advance worth $4k?
My take is you will get the machine when it is built. I can do a lot more with $4k, even buy a boat and go fishing. Maybe not new, but a decent fishing boat, pretty nice. Remember, time spent fishing doesn't count....
I'd wait. I have been through the wait, and put it on the back burner while waiting. It is not the end-all and be-all of the world. It's a truck.
It will soon have dirty carpeting and mud and scratches and dents and ...
so .. waiting now is just the start of the journey. And, I think your dealer is messing with you. IMO.

You never placed an order. You don't have an order, price protection, or priority toward a MY2023.

The dealer has an order for dealer stock that was once a retail order until the customer backed out.

Chances are you won't see that order. It has no priority (back of line) for MY 2023.

Find a dealer convenient to you who you can see taking it to for service. Put in an order as soon as the order bank reopens.

Get them to commit, in writing, to a certain purchase price. If that's MSRP, make sure they write out what that $ amount is, and preferably have them sign it saying they'll sell it to you for that exact $ amount.

Do you have any proof you actually have a valid order with this dealer? Unless they have provided you with documentation of an order in your name (Order #, DORA, etc.) , based on your 1st paragraph, unfortunately, it looks like you do not have an order and they are stringing you along for some other purpose. Hope I'm wrong on that, but that's the 1st thing to verify before proposing all the other options you are considering.

Thanks all for the feedback! You're confirming where I'm leaning, which is to cancel, and reorder for 23 MSRP.

For those asking, I do have a signed purchase order agreement, and an order number from the dealership (4 digit alpha-numeric), but no VIN. I've cross-references the order number on Ford's website, but without a VIN, the amount of info it gives me is limited.

You have an agreement to buy a vehicle off their lot with markup, which gives you no priority for 2023, only an offer to sell it to you with a markup. But it likely won't get built anyway. Unfortunately you'll be at the back of the line at the higher pricing level TBD, but should be able to get an order placed in about a month for no higher than MSRP.

I wonder how much the commercial buyers are paying over MSRP for their Fleet Vehicles?

I wonder how many of those bumped retail customers to 2023 and beyond.

If you cancel, wait until after August 2nd. Then the order will indeed be cancelled, and the vehicle will not come into the dealer later and he marks it up more than the 3K. I would question whether you will get an offer from Ford but not sure. Is your name recognized by Ford when you call customer service? Have you received any emails from Ford?

I believe you will receive the offer, if you do, before Aug 2. I could be wrong on that, but it seems a person should know their offer before deciding to roll over their order.

The BIG "?" is how many 2023's will be ordered not counting the 2022's reordered. Would not surprise me if order book is closed by mid October.

I got an email from Ford directly, telling me my MY22 was likely to push to MY23, and that they would offer me a financial incentive in August if that happens. So I'm sure there's an order with my name on it. The forum's feedback that it could be a dealers order with my customizations is concerning, but I think it's irrelevant since I'm leaning to cancelling and reordering.

Can folks educate me, why is it to my benefit to wait until 2 August to cancel, rather than cancelling now?

I paid msrp. Paying over is silly. I simply walked in got the run around one dealer the other one didn't have anything to show looked around online found a dealer with one in stock called and bought it went to it paid done.

You won't be getting the " Private Offer" on the old order, that was in someone else's name therefore, you'll be paying the new MRSP + 4K for a truck you really don't want. Wait and order your truck the way, and color you want. I don't think the 2023 trucks will take as long to get as the 2022 trucks did, now that they seem to be in production. If there's no problems with parts, it should take 4 or 5 months for your truck max.

I can't say that I know enough to educate anyone!!! I will give my thoughts. First, I see no disadvantage to waiting; what have you got to lose?? Now if you really like your dealer, cancel before August 2, and the vehicle will still come to him/her, and be sold with a high ADM. I do not understand how the dealer could have taken a refused order and switched to your name. I am thinking it was a stock order to begin with.

If you cancel and reorder you will lose the financial incentive AND will be placed with new MY23 orders which are in "line" after the MY22 orders that become reorders. Two very good reasons not to cancel before Aug 2. Or for that matter, why cancel at all if you are going to order. You will be giving up the incentive money and your place in line.
