What would you do if you were me? I had an original 2022 XL Hybrid order from November, 2021 at one Phoenix dealer. They didn't seem to know about the fact that I needed to place a new 2023 at that dealership, they thought the 2022 order would automatically roll over. Therefore, on the last day of the order bank being open for 2023 I went to another Phoenix dealer to place an order for a XL Hybrid. I was told by the second dealer that I probably wouldn't get one from their dealership because they had over 200 orders and not that many allocations. Finally, the original dealer realized that they were in error and assigned me another order that they had for a 2023 XL Hybrid. I found out about 2 months ago that the XL from the original deal was being built. Then, last Monday I got a call from the second dealer saying my XL Hybrid was ready to pick up there, which I went in and paid for and picked up. Now, I received a call from the original dealer saying the second Hybrid is ready to be picked up as well.

Long story short, should I buy the second Maverick and try and sell it for a profit or just let the dealer keep it and sell it (they have been adding about a 5k dealer mark-up to other Mavericks they've had for sale)? I will be at $27,200 out the door on the second Maverick with MSRP, delivery, doc fees, license, and tax. Is there enough of a market for a XL Hybrid to buy it and sell it or should I just not get involved?

If you have the time, I would suggest that you buy the second one and sell one of them yourself.
Once in a while it is nice for an individual such as yourself to profit from the process failures of a dealership.

I had the same situation and the Salesman asked if I would mind if he sold it to a friend who has been waiting. I told him to go ahead, let his friend buy it and tell him to enjoy. Life is too short to try to flip vehicles when there are so many other things to take care of.

You got two hybrids? Dang! If I send you $10 can you buy me a lottery ticket? I was lucky enough to get a hybrid last May. If it was me, I'd buy both and keep them! If you don't need two sell one. If you can let it go!

Get it and sell it. I sold my 22 XLT EB to Frod dealer when my 23 Lariat Hybrid was built and got $5K over MSRP. Selling my wife's 23 XLT Hybrid this week because her Lariat Hybrid is set to be built in 3 weeks. Offer of $5,500 over MSRP from Ford dealer.

Buy it! no doubt. I will take it. You can sell it on the open market for way more than 5K over invoice. Hybrids are the unicorn of Maverick. Don't let the dealer make the $, you pocket the $

The market is still really hot for hybrids. I would probably go ahead and purchase the second hybrid. I would sell mine for a nice profit if there was anything else on the market that could replace it. But since you have the truck you want that makes the decision much easier. If you have the VIN # I would run it through some of the dealerships (Carmax, Carvana, etc) with optional equipment and see exactly what they offer so I have a good idea what to expect. Then consider if it's worth the time and effort. One thing I believe is there will probably never be a chance like this in our lifetime to make a profit for just taking delivery of a vehicle. Don't forget to figure in capital gains tax, of course.

Nice problem to have. I would buy them both and sell one if you have the time and patience. Like others have mentioned, try carmax, carvana and others and you may be able to do a quick flip with little hassle and make some easy money.

I would say sell it to me! But you can get way more on the open market than I can afford. Put it up for sale and see what you can get!

But also dealing with people for selling things can be really annoying. Luckily since the hybrid XL is so wanted, you can probably be really picky in who you deal with.

You need to find out if you have price protection on your original order since that can be worth a couple of thousand dollars.

I ended up in a similar situation I had entered a preorder for a bare bones XL hybrid in July back when the order bank was going to open in August.

By the time the order bank opened in September it was clear that the XL hybrid would likely not be built so I entered a second order for an XLT Lux Ecoboost at a different dealership that was more likely to be made.

The XLT Lux Ecoboost was built and arrived about two weeks ago. When the Ecoboost was being shipped much to my surprise I got the email that the XL hybrid was scheduled to be built in June.

We will not drive it a lot of miles so the MPG of the Ecoboost is not a problem for us and I decided I preferred the better features of the XLT Lux so I wanted to keep that one.

In my situation I had these factors to consider;
1) A states sales tax of about 6.6% that would need to be paid a second time if I sold it to anyone who is not in my family. That is in addition to other registration and other fees
2) To get the title and licence plate in my state takes about 6 weeks which makes the car difficult to sell before then.
3) I would have needed to get an additional insurance policy for at least 6 weeks.
4) I paid cash for my first truck and I would need to figure out how to pay for the second truck and that was a bit complicated. If I sold some investments there would be capital gains taxes and if I financed it that would complicate selling it.
5) If I did make any money by selling the second Maverick I would owe taxes on the capital gains.

I asked my adult son if he was interested in the XL Hybrid Maverick but he was not so I just canceled the order and got my deposit back. Since it was already scheduled I would assume that the dealership will not actually cancel the order and they will just sell it when it comes in.

If they had arrived in the opposite order and the Hybrid would have arrived first then I would have bought that then traded it in on the Ecoboost XLT and in my state that would have saved me the sales tax on the trade in value so I might have made some money.

There seemed to just be too many Murphy's Law ways for trying to resell it to cause a problem.

It also sounds like even though the first dealership screwed up your original reorder that they somehow still got your your Maverick so they at least tried to make things right. I would not feel bad about letting them make some money off of it.

If you can swing it, buy both. Only real issue is in most states, the sales tax you'll have to pay on both, but in some states you can get a refund of part of the sales tax back if it is sold in the first year. If I were in your shoes I'd talk, to someone like Carmax asap to get a quote...I sold the Cayman to the left to them with a firm 30 day guaranteed price and they may have a way around you being hit with delivery sales tax, tag, etc fees. Dealing with individual buyers is a lot more risky than dealing with a larger company like CarMax, etc.

If you have the cash, get both.

But I agree, selling to a company for slightly less profit is better than dealing with an individual where you have to worry if their check is going to be good or if they are gonna have buyers remorse and harass you if you don't refund them. Plus all the joyriders who wont actually buy it that just want to test drive one. Or just the sour people who are pissed off that you're making money so they waste your time, schedule a meetup, and don't show just to get "revenge" on you.

I'm pretty darn sure you'll make at LEAST $1k profit worst case scenario.
