My first assignment in the USAF, I reported to my new boss on day 1 and introduced myself as Ken. He said, “What?” After repeating my rehearsed, nervous introduction, he said, “No! Your name is not Ken. I already have 4 Kens in this squadron. Your name is now Moe.” I’ve been Moe for 40 years now.

When I went to basic training (US Army, 1995), our First Sergeant tried something similar, though. He told us it was ok to be on a first name basis, but he understood that some people might have problems remembering so many new names. So, to make it easier, he told us HIS first name was First Sergeant, the Drill Sergeants' first names were Drill Sergeant, and all of our first names were Private. Except for that one guy who was prior service, his first name was Specialist

My username is decades old at this point and is a D&D character I created back in the 90s, one of my favorites I've ever played.

But the inspiration for it goes back to a character from JRR Tolkien's The Silmarillion and Jonathan Swift, the classical author (Gulliver's Travels, A Modest Proposal)

Derwood is what Samantha's Mom would call Her husband in the TV show "Bewitched". The character's name in the show was Darren. My parents liked the name so they gave it to me when I was born. In jest a few family members, customers and friends still call me "Derwood".

Military nickname as well, since at birth I was given 4 names, a crusty old SMSGT gave me it instead. I was in a multi service unit. Name stuck. Now I go by 5 names.

My favorite myth in Greek Mythology is the tale of Pandora's box. I started using Pandora as pen name in middle school.
In high school, I had a friend taking french who would always call me dear in French with is 'Cherie'. (Plus, I really loved the book the Vampire Lestat)
Hence my username evolved to CheriePandora and it's been that way ever since.
