A few months ago, I started losing the connection to the point where there was no connection at all. So I opened the bottom panel and wiggled the cables, and I recovered the connection. For a few more months it worked, then I started having problems again and completely lost the connection. I ended up buying a new USB hub (new from Ford.com). Soon after I installed it, I noticed that if I tap on the hub directly, it will disconnect. A lot of people have mentioned the same thing on Ford forums. I took it to the dealer and the service advisor said he had no idea—he said it must be the USB hub or the cable behind it. So I bought a cable tester, but everything tested fine. It wasn’t until I powered off my phone and connected it again that I got the connection back. So my theory is: the mini-USB cable Ford uses is a very bad design/technology with a history of failing. I think we lose connection from power briefly, and when the phone detects multiple failures, it stops trying to communicate (or stops trying to establish CarPlay) with that connection. This makes sense because during the days I had absolutely no connection, my wife used the car once and she was able to connect. The bad part is that this will probably keep happening.

Buy an Android Auto/Apple Carplay compatible wireless adapter and forget about it.

We went through similar issues with connections and the adapter made them disappear. It's $40 well spent.

I had the same issue with connection in my 2020 Fusion. Never got to the bottom of it and the dealership was zero help. Sounds like the same thing.

I was having problems connecting my phone to car play in my Maverick. When I plugged my phone into the USB jack, not only did Car Play not work, but the phone wasn't charging either. My wife's iPhone worked just fine.

It turns out that the problem was lint stuck in the lighning jack in my iPhone. I used a toothpick to get the lint out. Then it was working fine. NOTE: Make sure you use a non-conductive toothpick or other tools so you don't short out the pins in the iPhone connector.
