What’s the best and most cost effective way to upgrade the stock (non BO) system? I have limited to zero experience with modern sound systems. I’d like to keep the stock head unit and it’s features. I just want a nice loud and punchy sound system

Talk to the experts at Crutchfield. Better speakers are always the best way to upgrade any system. Tell them what you listen to and your budget and they will make recommendations. It’s probably too early for detailed instructions, but Crutchfield is the DIYer’s best friend.

Can you just replace speakers? Or do you need to add amplifiers to make then work well?

Crutchfield is great with tech support and giving you all the right instructions, parts/accessories, etc but their speaker selection isn't great. I spent a few bucks last year with them upgrading my stock Chevy speakers and was disappointed with the quality of the speakers I got. I've been doing a lot of my own stereo work for 20 years but with the Maverick I'm letting the pros handle it this time.

If you get good speakers, the stock radio may be underpowered for them and will deliver poor sound quality, and you can actually blow speakers underpowering them just as easily as overpowering them. I'd recommend an amp to sufficiently power any upgraded speakers.

Amplifiers and signal processors all help, it depends on whether your looking for cleaner sound or you want to blast big volume. If you just listen to talk radio any upgrade is a waste. My preference is classical so better speakers would help… I don’t listen at loud volume so haven’t a need for additional amplification. If you like to blast rock or country then you probably want to add amp, processor and subwoofer.

I’m planning on adding an amp and replacing the speakers, and adding some sound deadener at the same time.

To the OP: you can get an amp that accepts speaker level inputs.

Set a budget on what your willing to spend. Then visit a few of your local audio shops tell them your budget and ask what they would recommend. If keeping your stock unit you need a sound processor/equalizer of some sort also if adding bass you will need an amplifier more than likely. You can upgrade your sound relatively cheap these days.

As long as you don't mind paying twice the price in some instances... Infinity dash speakers are 44% on Amazon.

I think the most cost effective way to improve the sound would be to add a cheap, under-the-seat powered subwoofer. For $300 you can fill out the totally void bottom end.
