Putting a hitch cover on seems like a dumb idea. The dirt can't flow through and will cause rust issues. It won't rust out, but you might need a sledge hammer to insert your carrier...
Just curious about the comment regarding dirt getting in with a hitch cover. I'm picking up my Maverick today and of course it has a hitch that I might never use so I was looking at hitch covers to burn up some old ford points. Came across this one and it says:

  • Design provides excellent receiver protection from debris while allowing water drainage to help avoid corrosion
Looks like this will fit on the Maverick so just curious if anyone has thoughts on the issue of the hitch possibly rusting out?

Unlike some SUV hitches, its open at the other end. Are you also going to put another cover on that end, allowing sweat to just sit in the tube, close one end and allow dirt and water to accumulate in the tube, or open both ends and allow dirt and water to flush through?
