I finally was successful in getting them out. Took lots of prying and 3 of the 4 grommets pulled out with the tailight assembly. 2 of those sheared off their anchor points to the body so I had to glue them back in to the sheet metal.
Don't know what the deal was with mine other than it was chilly, 40s outside temps which took away some of the flex of the anchors.
Anyway, all is well now as long as the backups or other bulbs in there don't burn up....

I remember a past post about replacement grommets from Ford, some early trucks had issues with not enough tension on the rubbers.
I can't find it , maybe someone with better search skills can find it?

So far I haven't had any issues with the light unit itself popping out since I reinstalled. I knew you don't tighten the side screws very tight at all, just snug.
I am going to have to remove the right one again as that Lasfit reverse light has quit working. In fact, I'm going to return the Lasfit bulbs and buy Auxito. My old faithful brand. Cheaper too...
