Hi there. Didn't see much of this combination online. Has anyone had long term experience using a tailgate pad for bikes (I was looking at getting a yakima gatekeeper) while also having the Ford tailgate spoiler installed? Worried the pressure/weight from the bike(s) would pull the spoiler off over time.

Thanks!

I wouldn't be worried about the weight, and I'd much more be worried about the fit of the tailgate pad. I assume you're looking at the Ford tailgate spoiler: https://accessories.ford.com/products/satin-black-tailgate-spoiler

I think it's not likely to fit well because of the raised, uneven height of the spoiler.

I would skip it if you haven't bought the spoiler yet. If you have it already installed then might as well buy the tailgate pad and see how it goes. Maybe try a RaceFace T2 because it has straps at the top designed to accomodate a curved bed, but I think it could make this fit better on a spoiler, also.

I have the Ford spoiler and I wouldn’t do it.

In fact, that’s the only thing I wouldn’t consider doing with the tail gate spoiler attached. Anything else isn t effected. Even hauling plywood in the second gate position doesn’t touch the spoiler.

Those spoilers are painted black, not molded black plastic like the rest of the bed trim. Even with a tail mat I suspect the paint would mar over time. And yes, the 3M tape, as good as it is, might work loose.

Why not just get a 2 x 8, or what ever, screw some fork quick release mounts on it, and ride them in the bed?

How cool do you want your truck to look?

BTW, with a Ford trifold tonneau cover the tailgate spoiler increased my mpg, especially on the highway.

Hmm good point. I’ll have to check out the RaceFace. I don’t have the truck or the spoiler yet, just planning my mods!

Interesting, I never would have known they were painted. That is a good point! I wonder what color the spoiler is underneath, I also wanted to combine the spoiler + tonneau for increased mpgs.

I might try the diy route eventually, the only problem is I have an old road bike I would need to convert to a quick release axle. Our MTBs already have it. Just thought nothing beats throwing over the tailgate as far as prep to travel goes lol

Definitely want my truck to look cool, at least as cool as yours! I dig the color matched badge. Maybe I compromise with a cab spoiler and a tailgate pad 😂

i have a E mountain bike and due to its weight (54lbs) I bought a hitch mounted motorcycle carrier at Harbor freight for 165 dollars works great.

Thanks for the complement!

Wow, no QR on your road bike? Must be pretty old!
Dont forget that you have a PICKUP now. That’s what the bed is for. People threw their bikes in the back of those for decades and thought nothing of it!

Those spoilers are probably grey or white plastic. They prime and paint them. You can order a color matched one. I didn’t because the black flows with the rest of the bed trim. (See pic)

Nobody here has bothered to research whether their cab spoilers increased their mpgs or not. They had no idea what mpg they got before adding the spoiler and still don’t know what they get afterwards.
Several of them bought hybrids. If mpg was a selling point for them you’d think they would research what a cab spoiler has, or hasn't, done for their fuel economy

The majority seems to have done it for looks, which is fine if that’s all you’re after.

If you go the cab spoiler route please, please, test and review the before and after effects and let us know what impact it has. Do the before mph with the tonneau added so as not to skew the test adding both spoiler and cover at the same time.

Since no manufacturer of vehicles puts cab spoilers on their trucks,( and they do integrate tailgate spoilers on all of them now), I doubt cab spoilers help mpg at all, and might even diminish mileage.

I have seen a Maverick with both spoilers on. The cab spoiler looked tacked on, especially the leading edge area. The only examples I’ve seen that dont look boy ricer have been painted body color which helped the look.

The tailgate spoilers integrate almost seamlessly, much more stock looking.

I must have the spoiler! It looks so good on white. Time to make an onlyfans to raise $219. Might take me a while!

Yeah my coworker keeps telling me to get a hitch mount. I just remember how much of a pain it was taking my dad’s on and off his truck as a kid!

I agree, the tailgate spoiler is definitely more stylish.

I have an old Schwinn caliente I picked up from a LBS a year ago, has two levers on the top tube for shifting. Probably older than me lol

If I do anything I’ll definitely get measurements. I too have wondered about mpg affects of certain mods.

The rack I have is pretty easy to get on and off. Thule makes good ones.

I hope the spoiler also works with the ford hard rollup cover as well. Looks really good.

How much? We've driven our Hybrid since April. I get about 40.5mpg mixed city with some 75mph highway, wife gets 2mpg less with just city driving....
