King ranchero already settled the discussion, but the width of the door at a 45 degree angle times 2 absolutely does add to the overall length. The door doesn't fold and retract under the bed!
So a 20.3 inch tailgate added to a 54.4 inch bed gives you 78.25?

Are you into a new maths?

3.85” gap between the bottom edge of the tailgate to the end of the bed is very reasonable. Why does that sound absurd to you?

Not kidding at all. Granted this pic isn’t the Maverick, but in general, the hinge is not like a piano hinge the has a minimal gap when opened and closed. When closed, the gap between the plastic bed liner is probably only 1”. When open, you can see the gap grows.

Still looks to be about an inch. I've owned a lot of P/U's in my 71 years, can never remember a gap that was 3-4 inches unless the tailgate was over loaded and bowed like my buddies 65 F100 tailgate after loading a small asphalt roller...

There's the gap itself but also the portion of the tailgate that is below the bed floor when closed that is also added to the length when opened.

From the above example this whole area becomes exposed and is now usable.

Here’s how I see it. I’m pretty sure “X” will be bigger than 1“ and closer to 3 or more.

The problem is Ford published a different number. Trust who you want, I am trusting the guys who designed it and have the CAD files as well as the actual physical pieces. And if I am wrong, who is harmed? If I am correct then anyone needing a longer bed is SOL

I'll trust the Ford employee close to the Maverick program who confirmed 78.25". ;)

I guess we will see in a month. You build based on your measurements, I will on Ford‘s. Guess which one is guaranteed to fit?

You ruined everything with this sort of logic. The error in a tape measure is so large it can't be trusted! 🤣 😆 🙂

Is this like the same FORD measurement that for weeks said in their Build&Price website their "bed extender" would not be compatible with their own bed tonneau? Yes, until they corrected their own installation measurement/instructions, and now are backtracking that the "bed extender" will be compatible with their own tonneau cover.

I am saying we should trust the number of the guy who actually designed and built the truck rather than some other person. That’s why I have only quoted Ford’s published numbers.

Clearly I was misunderstood... Because I agree!
