My 2023 Ford Maverick Lariat Hybrid.
I have had the car for a year, this started 6 weeks ago.

When in normal drive, from a stopped position the electric drive will not control the start as expected.
When I press the accelerator I expect a slow creep forward from the electric drive or gas drive.
What I get is nothing, then as I continue to press the gas pedal the engine suddenly engages and the car lurches forward.
It happened to my daughter and she almost hit a parked car.
It happened to me in front of the house and I almost hit my other car.

Sometimes it happens after we pull out, put the car in reverse to do a three point turn, and when we put is back in drive...nothing...then sudden surge when the gas pedal is 1/4 to 1/2 way down. Why put the pedal down so much, because the car is just sitting there and it seems natural to add gas.

I suspect that the electric drive is not engaging, then the gas engine senses that the gas pedal is half way down and the engine surges. It is startling to say the least and not safe. If this happened in a three point turn near a cliff, that would be the end of us for sure.

Ford service says no problem, but we asked for the electrical expert to take a second look.

Is it just me? Does anyone know what is causing this?

Thank you,
Don

If Auto Hold is turned on, try turning it OFF. The button is on the center console, near the Parking Brake. There is also a green icon like this one, on the Instrument Cluster, to indicate if it's enabled.

I will try this, when it is back from the shop.
I did not check it, but it should be off each time the car is shut off, I think.

You might be correct and if so that would be huge. I just read online that the setting stays on after shutdown. I will check the car and manual when it returns from Ford Service.

Yes. If you have auto-hold turned on, it will stay enabled until you turn it off. Unlike the Drive Mode, which always defaults to Normal, next time you start the truck.

Are you on a slight hill? My truck does this often. It will automatically have a brake hold similar to the one that you can toggle on and off. It only will do thi on an incline though. When you did your 3 point turn, was it on a slight grade?

Absolutely flat ground. We don't have any hills in the Low Country of South Carolina.

You were 100% correct. The Truck is finally back from Ford. Ford could not figure out what was happening, we will call them tomorrow. We needed oil change and and a few other things so it had to go into the shop anyway.

I asked my wife if the "auto hold" was on, she said yes. Then I asked her to turn it off and test drive the car. The surge is gone.

Now, I know it was not a "surge" just the normal "Auto Hold" function.

Our Maverick works like a dream. Thank you so very much for this fix. My daughter loves that truck.
