I barely avoided a serious accident a few years ago when I met someone in the opposite lane who was pulling an overloaded trailer behind a ½ ton pickup. I was driving a vehicle that looked like an unmarked DOT SUV. When the pickup pulling the trailer came over the top of the hill and saw me, he hit his breaks. The overloaded trailer pushed his little half ton pickup around violently. He ended up sideways across my lane so fast that I had no time to react. It was by the grace of God that the trailer pulled his pickup off the road directly in front of me and I avoided T-boning him. I did stop to see if he was okay because the trailer and the contents rolled over several times, not to mention his pickup had done three 360-degree donuts before it stopped in the ditch.

Towing capacity has more to do with braking capability and handling than getting the load moving. That far over limit on the road is moronic.

This is way more weight than can be done safely. But.... non-body-on-frame vehicles are underrated in the US. My previous car, a Subaru Outback, had a tow rating of 2700lbs in the US but the exact model in the UK had a rating of 4400lbs. Our speed limits are higher and we tend to be less educated about towing so ratings need to be lower. If you know what you're doing and you're not putting others at risk, I think the Maverick can probably safely tow slightly more than it's rated for short trips.

My 2001 4x4 Ranger 4.0L has a 6,000 pound towing capacity. But I don't think I would even try that.

Hopefully they had working brakes on the trailer but still stupid . when I tow I try to keep the tow vehicle close to 2 times the weight of towed vehicle . f150 had tow rating of 10 k and towed travel trailer weighed 4400 lbs . add equipment and close to 5 k + . never hauled TT trailer with anything in tanks . filled up water tanks close to camp site . that just how I do trailering . its worked for me .
