Side bed rail eye hooks

Can you just install the eye hooks in the bed rail holes instead of the complete bar
Assembly?or does the bar actually have to add strength to keeping the bed from flexing when you tie something down?

I would say the bar is there for both adjustment of your tie down locations and to distribute the weight of the load across all fasteners, rather than one particular bolt location. Can it be done? Sure. Can it increase the chance of damage to your bed? Possibly depending on the weight of the load and how heavy handed you are with the ratchet strap.
