Retro Look: XL Wheels Body Color Matched

What are the thoughts on going retro with XL steelies painted to match whatever the body color is?

cap silver, wheel black, then narrow chrome or SS beauty rings at the rim . That is what I would do.

I owned these two cars and had painted the wheels black and 1 had stock and one had aftermarket beauty rings. I can't find pictures of others that I did. oh well.

I've thought about it, decided not to. You're probably not old enough to remember some base model cars back in the early 60's came with body color wheels and a small chrome hub cap. The upscale models had a full wheel cover. So it just looks cheap to me. But it's 60 years later, if you like the look that's all that counts.

Myself, I plan to leave the rim of the wheel silver, paint the area with the round holes black, and leave the center hub cap silver. Should be easy to do and will make a nice contrast, I think. And the black will not draw attention to all those big round holes like the silver does. Kind of the same treatment that Bill mentions above but without having shiny trim/beauty rings.

That seems to work with darker and lighter colors, but absolutely not with the in-between ones. Would not do that with Cactus Gray.

I believe its metallic flake silver if I recall. Not really my bag. Not sure why they didn't just go gloss black as a base.

Maybe it would also look good just leaving the center cap that silver, or maybe even experiment with those chrome spray paints, never tried one of those before.
