Waiting for my 2024 Lariat, I have been looking at bed covers. The hard tri-folds looked attractive, but one thing bothered me. When you need the maximum bed space, the cover lifts up blocking the rear window. This leaves the driver only the side view mirrors to look out for traffic.

Trucks can also carry tall cargo that can also block the rear view window.

Thinking about some modern cars that rely on cameras instead of a rearview mirror, it occurred to me that the Maverick already has a rear view camera.

Why not modify the software to allow the use of the rear view camera when the window is blocked?? What about it Ford?

Great idea, but I'd rather have a front camera. FX4 package without a front camera is cheap. Advertising a truck with off road package and capability without a front camera tells how cheap ford is. The Santa Cruz has front and sides camera and they don't say much about off-roading stuff.

Different camera angles. The one you use to back up isn't the view you'd want in a rear view.
That and those vehicles with rear view cameras display in the rear view mirror, not the dash.

I'll say it, you need to understand what you're buying. All these 'features' people keep saying the Maverick should have aren't possible with meeting the price point.

It would be nice if we got all the things we wanted, but this is a low cost vehicle. I couldn't believe that the top of the line Lariat didn't come with homelink to open the garage door, but it is, what it is!

I don't understand how people expect to have feature in a 30k vehicle that you don't get in a 46k competitor.

I like your idea. We know it can be done because the camera stays on screen for a short while after shifting into drive and moving forward. Some hard tri-fold cover, like my WeatherTech can be taken off on a couple minutes and doesn’t block the rear window.

Let me tell you how awesome I thought this would be on my Model 3......

And let me tell you how NOT awesome it ended up being on my Model 3.....

For starters the Maverick's rear-camera is low resolution, low frame-rate, and would be able to handle video at speed.

Even with the Model 3's much better camera, insanely better and larger screen, it just wasn't a useful feature at all for driving especially in the name of safety.

I totally agree that every new and wonderful feature would be awesome to have, but the Mav is an economy car at its heart and don't you think you could just look in your side mirrors for a nanosecond while you're driving forward to get a general idea of what's behind you? The Rear View thingie in the middle of your dash would show what's directly in back of you when you're in reverse gear. I think if you tried real hard, you could make this old school approach work.
