I ordered a Hybrid Maverick through a local dealership and received the email from Ford, my order was accepted. I also have another email from Ford with a VIN #, things are moving along. Since ordering my Maverick, my salesman has called me 3 times stating they got a Maverick in, would I like to purchase it. Sure I would, but they want 8 to 10 thousand dollars over MSRP. I'm not that anxious. My friend tells me when my Ford Maverick that I ordered comes in, the dealership will raise the price of it by at least 3 to 5 thousand dollars. When I ordered my Maverick, we built it, priced it and ordered it. I've ordered vehicles in the past, they come in, I pay the price. Is something different these days? If this were to happen, I'm pretty sure Consumer reporters might be interested and the dealership wouldn't want poor publicity? Any comments on this? Thank you

You should be paying the price at the time of order since it's a retail order and not dealer stock. This is assuming your dealer is not a scumbag.

See if you can talk to anyone else who has received a custom order from that dealership and look up reviews.

I'd have a conversation with dealer confirming they will sell for MSRP. Would have though you would do that while researching dealers to order through. But what is done is done. So talk to the dealer, hope for the best. If it comes to the worst, your best recourse is public shaming if dealer. Good luck.

Yes, things have changed drastically in the last few years. If you do not have a Buyers Order (it will say that at the top) that is signed by both yourself and the Dealer Manager, then do not be surprised if they change your price. You may have e-mails or other docs showing the price, but the way dealers view things, anything that is not specially signed by the Dealer Manager is not a Contract and they are free to change the price. Is this legally correct? In most states the answer is "No". However, dealers know that only a very, very small number of buyers actually know the law for that state (Promessory Estoppel, Verbal contracts, etc.) and will try to litigate. And even if you do litigate, your vehicle was long ago sold to someone else.

If you do not have a signed Buyer's Order, then the best thing to do is go to the dealer now and get one. A legitimate dealer will be happy to provide one for you. If they are not willing (and they will give you dozens of fake excuses as to why they cannot), then expect them to screw you once the vehicle comes in.

I'm hoping the dealership is not a scumbag. At this point, I'm just putting together a list of Consumer reporters, TV stations, blogs, etc. in my area, just in case I need to relay how disappointed I am if the price goes up. I'm not going to give the dealership any advance notice, I'll wait for the day of delivery. Thank you

WTF does this "friend" know that got you worried? My 1st comment is Ghost the "friend"!

2nd comment is go pay a personal visit to the dealer- with a friendly attitude- just asking a couple questions that occurred to you since ordering. DON'T go in there accusing/threatening anybody or assuming there is a problem- just calmly ask the sales rep that placed your order, or manager if rep not available what their policy is on customer retail special orders- do they sell at MSRP or have another policy? Is it in writing/visible anywhere in the showroom to confirm? If you are satisfied with answers on MSRP, ask what about any special dealer add-on packages they "normally" install and if they add those can you decline to have them added to your custom order? Finally ask if they require you to use their financing to purchase your truck? Sometimes they'll try to match/beat any outside financing you can get but not penalize you for not using theirs. Finally do not discuss any trade ins, and actually try not to even do that if you were thinking/planning on doing it- that will give them an opening to start playing with numbers on another part of your purchase and make it harder to get a clean purchase.

Also, be prepared to walk away if they don't give straight answers at any time- but DON'T get paranoid about what they "might" do and "cancel" your order before even going in there to look it over and test driving it after it arrives.

Good Luck!

Thank you. I've purchased new vehicles in the past, never heard of this, usually get notified my vehicle is in, pay the price ordered and on my way. I've done this public shaming thing twice in the past and the B.S. Companies both came through and did what was right! So sad things have to go that way!

Thank you, all good information. I'm sure the dealership would love for me to walk away, that's not gonna happen, they'll sell it for 10K over MSRP. I can be VERY nice while discussing things, but I hate trying to be taken advantage of, I'm old school. I think I'll pop by after the new year and inquire on some things to feel them out. Happy New Year.

I'd be careful going in hot with the dealer. Your friend may be wrong, different situation, different salesman, new policies, etc. They may have no intent on screwing you, but you go in accusing and they say screw it and do it... I'd go in with the position you assume they are going to honor MSRP and make them say otherwise. Bring it up as part of another conversation (order status, making a change, etc.). That way it doesn't sound like them putting an ADM on it was ever even a consideration to you.

Excellent advice. I've been told I'm too nice sometimes, but I don't like being taken advantage of, as if anyone does. Y'all been giving me some good advice and it is appreciated!

Or just call your dealer and confirm there will be no ADM on your truck rather than wait till the last minute to find out you gotta bend over and back up

I didn't need any Buyer's Order to get exactly what was promised by my dealer- and they don't give them anyways. Just advertised MSRP + minimal fee clearly advertised, and all was fine.

I think this Buyers Order angle is blown out of proportion on here sometimes. You should not need that with a good dealer that wants to earn repeat business. YMMV

I ordered mine with X-Plan pricing which avoids a lot of pricing BS. But I still looked around the dealer's lot to see what they did with their other vehicles. I saw no extra nonsense fees and addons on other window stickers, so I'm reassured that the price on my order sheet will be the correct price. I'll know for sure in about 45 days, I hope.

Since my dealer sold ZERO 2022 Hybrids (except my cancelled order) and 5 EBs, and no other 2023 Hybrids...I don't expect this dealer sees the Hybrid as anything as "special" as I do. Up here, everyone wants a diesel Super-Duty.
