Anyone find an effective method of keeping pests from nesting in the engine compartment?
In my area i have caught rats and mice previously in other vehicles. I think it's also possible that birds may be nesting as well. Getting to be quite a nuisance. and no cats won't work since the coyotes will make short work of them.

Search the forum for "mice" or "pests." There are many, many threads with homebrew recipes, product recommendations, best practices, etc.

Last week someone suggested a rubber snake from a dollar store. I spray my cabin air filter with peppermint oil.

Bounce brand clothes dryer strips for rodents. I staple several around in the engine compartment away from moving parts. You must change them every week to ten days. The odor deters rodents b/c they can't detect tasty hoses made with soy product and the rodents can't detect danger. Fold the strip over a hose and use an ordinary household stapler.

This won't prevent critters from invading, but will prevent them from chewing wires. Used it for years after mice chewed through a bunch of wires in my former truck. Have had mice continue to nest but never touched the wires.

Rats attacked my 2020 F150 parked in the same place my F150 & F350 parked for the past 40 years. The only thing that stop the rats was 4 LED 12V tractor lights from Northern Supply. Placed the 4 lights under each wheel well that I park over nightly. Small solar panel with timer turns LEDS on @ night and off in the morning. No more rat problems.

I've heard this repellant solution for years. Folks swear by the dryer strips by saying, well I use them and don't have a problem, speaking of campers. I say, campers or engine compartments, if you use them and don't have a rodent problem, it's because there are no rodents around. I've heard that Irish spring is an effective repellant as well. If these items were effective, there would be ads and claims in every RV store from coast to coast about their effectiveness. Companies will not overlook a new way to vend their products. You would see these repellants for sale in RV stores.

I told the story 3/4 years ago here , when I opened the hood of a vehicle [ not a Maverick] a rat jumped out on me, the guy standing next to me ran away screaming and I think he's still going haven't seen him since, the only thing that saved me was it was raining had a slippery rain jacket on the rats nails couldn't dig in to it he fell down. I was in NYC the rats get big, he was half the size of a cat, I don't go in the city any more to look at cars.

I tried that on my mother's car that we put away for the winter at my cottage. In the Spring we found a mouse nest in the Bounce box that was left in the trunk and there were a few sheets still in the box.

I recommend a Youtuber who focuses on pests, traps, repellants, and footage of his tests. I don't know what is so appealing, but before long I was binge watching his stuff. LOL https://www.youtube.com/@ShawnWoods-Homestead
