I’ve owned a Maverick for 500 miles. So far it is my favorite. Gas mileage, options, ride comfort, and styling are fantastic.

I have had a Titan, Titan XD, and Frontier (P4X), and Xterra. The Frontier/Xterra will always be a favorite to me. The Maverick narrowly edged it out (when I remove my very heavy Nissan fanboy bias).

Maverick or Frontier, you made a great choice.

I also agree with @Micheal that the Frontier is a more direct competitor with the Ranger. If you look back to the D21 days it was always comparable in size and capacity. The only gripe I have about the Frontiers are the abysmal gas mileage and high price. Nissan is more than capable of designing a solid turbo four that could match the 2.0T or 2.3T if they wanted.

It has been very fun to drive. Not anything like any truck I have driven. Closest to the little Saturn sports car I once owned. It just sticks to the road on curves. Almost zero bodyroll. Deceptively smooth acceleration to high speed ( only real downside you can be going really fast and not get the trill ;)
And if you have to punch it, scary fast acceleration. But unlike the fullsized truck it will stop accelerating immediately with foot off gas.

No mavericks in a decent range at dealers to test drive?
Perhaps try the regional section of this forum and find a local person that has one. Maverick owners are cool. Bet they would let you drive theirs?
competition? If not in a hurry dodge is hitting the streets with maverick size in mind. Toyota is doing the same. You tube has videos you can see what they look like.
The problem with both? Ram is dodge and fiat destroyed them. Google dodge /ram reliability just don’t trust my word alone. They suck, end of story.
Toyota? Like Honda they used to be bulletproof. They both changed and cut cost and corners to profit. Had a problem with a 22 crv that floods oil pan with gas. Honda fix os change oil every 1k miles. Google oil dilution and you’ll get pages of lawyers wanting to sue Honda and make money. My fix was trading back to ford. Knock wood, never had an issue yet

Thanks everyone for the replies. I forgot to mention that my wife and I did drive a Ranger. My impression was that the powertrain was superior to the Tacoma, but the ride was worse. However, if I was an artisan actually transporting my tools every day to the job site, Ranger would probably be at the top. My Mav is delayed coming in which is fine, I'm in no rush. If I feel it doesn't match the quality of the Frontier, I think I'll hold off and get a Frontier when our old minivan actually dies. Unlike the Mav, the Nissan appears to be readily available on Carvana and at dealerships. Downside if the mileage, or course.

The shift knobs is absolutely great. If you change vehicle frequently maybe you need retraining but I have no problem at all and like the system very much.

Find a Ford Edge with same ECOboost + 8 speed trans and test drive it. That was what I did while waiting for a Maverick I could test drive. Wasn't going to buy a vehicle without a test drive or sight-unseen! I'm old school and always climb all over them in person and test drive before committing hard earned $ for a new vehicle.

So, around Summer 2021 my 1 and only local dealer told me he had a 2022 Edge (platinum I think) with the 2.0 and handed me the keys and said have fun! I was really impressed with stable feel, great acceleration with no detectable turbo lag and smooth shifting tranny. I got another call he had a Maverick ECO in 1st week of October 2021 and did I want to drive it before it sold. Sure! So I test drove it and confirmed it felt just like the Edge I drove earlier. Went ahead and ordered my Mav Dec 2021 and received Nov 2022. Absolutely happy with the Maverick and again, it drives just like that Edge and the earlier test drive in Maverick.

1 Thing you are NOT going to get if you go mid-size is IRS! IMO that along with the AWD really gives a more planted and confident feel on the road .

To get a feel, if you can find one, a Bronco Sport. About as close as you can get.
Personally i find they drive quite differently feel wise. But you’re right its likely closest… maverick is like a really stiff riding bronco sport i guess. Also you have to get the right bronco sport or you’ll have a different engine which throws the feel off as well
