I just got an email from Ford to update my Nav system on my 2024 Lariat Hybrid. It came with extremely limited instructions. I downloaded the files which included instructions. Since I was such a large file it was zipped and it was 13 GB. So I bought a 126 GB thumb drive to transfer it to my truck. Whether zipped or unzipped the nav file would not down load to my truck. I called Ford up and they answered right away with the phone number that came up in my truck with error code. I was told that the license file had to be inserted into the Map files folder. Then since my USB thumb drive was too big and it was 3.1 it would not work. It had to be be between 8 and 32 GB, and also be 2.0 or 3.0 USB drive. BTW Ford will sell you a thumb drive for $40. I thought I would save money getting my own. Look how long it takes to download from the thumb drive which will cause other issues with the truck turning off b4 it is complete. What a total goat rope.

BTW this download will not transfer over WIFI to truck. You have to use a USB thumb drive to transfer it.

I was just at Ford for an oil change. I am not sure they do Nav updates without a charge.

Updating a navigation map just to have the latest version would not be considered a warranty or recall situation imo and the dealer would likely charge for that service. Sounds like getting it preloaded on a usb drive from ford would be the easiest route/hassle.

Did the instructions downloaded in step #1 not include loading the license file in the map folder, and/or the size limit on the thumb drive? That would be irritating.
I believe the download time estimate is to pull it down from the internet to your local computer, rather than the time to transfer from thumb drive to truck, which should be faster. If your internet service and home wi-fi are fast(er), your time could be shorter. Then writing that file to thumb drive is another 5 to 15 minutes, depending on whether it is USB 2.0/3.0/3.1/3.2?.
Loading the truck, USB2.0 can reach 480mbps read which could transfer in (fiddles fingers) less than 6 minutes? Less time if the Mav supports USB3.0. Might be constrained by the write speed in the Mav. (Probably double the time estimate for verification after download.)
Good luck. Hoping to see a successful post-op assessment.

To avoid the hassles and costs associated with Navigation system updates, I use Apple Car Play to access GPS apps on my iphone. Works well for me and I always have the latest version with no additional effort on my part.

Don, You are right about loading time on my computer, but in the instructions it said it could take an hour to upload to truck from Thumb Drive and warned the truck could turn off. Instructions say this.
"SYNC software update will continue
for approximately the next 60
minutes"

This is 2024... not 1924 & ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE ! I think my 9 yr old grandson could write transfer code better than this.

Hum, guess this adds light to fords issue with so many software recalls, recall on a recall, stop sales due to software camera recalls, battery charging software calibration issues on hybrids since MY22 and still not fixed in current MY25, the lists goes on. Their software engineers need help, just my opinion

There are plenty of efficient languages to write in. I think it is the process & the people writing the code that is the issue; possibly the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing (HW vs SW). This topic is WAY old...Ford is definitely not listening to their customers.

This is the way.

Using maps app built into a phone are always going more current than something that has to be manually updated, like SYNC. And it show up on the truck screen automatically, whenever you connect your Android or apple device to the truck.
