When doing 60 mph my 2023 hybrid dash blue bar varies between 30 mpg and 60 mpg and occasionally will go into electric drive mode....this leads me to believe that highway driving both the engine and the battery drives are propelling my maverick at the same time....is that what is happening...ty

The hybrid battery will give at best 3 to five minutes of added power to the ICE going up a long grade or pulling a load or doing highways speeds before it needs the Ice. I think I read that somewhere in here.
So pulling a load at big speeds is basically on the ice and Its HP after a short time. Again after a regen period.

It sounds like you are expecting full EV performance.

There have been posts which I cannot find in a quick search reporting the distance you can run to get to an gas station if you run completely out of gas. It was surpisingly low, on the order of 5 miles as I recall.

No, it will not let you cruise down the highway at 60 mph on battery alone. Your best electrical performace will be at moderate speeds in town with lots of stop and go for regenerative braking helping recharge the battery.

There is confusion here and incorrect information posted by some EcoBoost owners. I will ask them to please stay in their lane so to speak.

Yes. The battery powers the electric motor to propel the truck AT ANY SPEED when conditions are right.

I have observed 100% electrical propulsion at up to 82 MPH.

I have accelerated (albeit gently) from zero to 50 MPH on battery alone more than a few times.

Usually though, it is a combination of gasoline engine torque and electric motor torque acting together in concert to propel the vehicle.

The battery pack is small. Tiny.
And Ford has programmed that it must stay 30% to 70% charged. So you get to use 40% of an already small battery.

Best Case Scenario starting at 70% and draining it to 40% at a gentle 25 MPH will get you 3 miles.

Usually the truck's battery is somewhere around 50-60%. 70% is rare. So you will go no farther than 1.5 to 2 miles on battery alone.

Going up a steep grade you may get 30 seconds to 1 minute of boost.

When on a steep grade and while towing a heavy trailer the hybrid truck will run like a train locomotive, so you are not very limited by the small battery size.

Fuel economy will be low, but torque to the wheels will be high:

Gas engine revs RPM higher (like dropping to a lower gear).

Gas engine sends some torque to the wheels AND generates huge amounts of electricity at the same time.

A large amount of electricity is sent to the traction motor that puts torque to the wheels.

The battery; once depleted to 30% just sits there and does nothing.... indefinitely... until you hit a flat or downhill section, or hit the brakes, then it starts to recharge.

On level ground it's pretty rare it'll switch to full electric for more than a brief amount of time once you get above 55 MPH or so unless you're deliberately doing some hypermiler technique like pulse & glide. The 25 hp the electric motor outputs has a hard time countering air resistance (which increases dramatically) alone at higher speeds. In that range most of the efficiency is going to come from the fact that the CVT can run as a deep overdrive, especially once the HV battery maxes out and there's minimal generation load.

I think a big mis-conception is:

The small battery pack limits the time & conditions you can get stellar MPG.

The small battery pack DOES NOT limit what you can or can't do with the Hybrid variant of this truck.

I hope that helps.

Anything 55 or over will not have Much electric only time. Best mileage comes at 45mph or less. Perfect for city/suburban driving. Highway driving will only give slightly better mpg that a gas only.

More than a little extra HP/torque available from the TM being fed by the ICE.

Have you recorded how much the generator puts out to send to the TM to power the wheels in series hybrid mode? (Aka "locomotive mode")

I have a ScanGauge and can look at it in real time but cannot record data to later graph.

Don't always believe what your truck says you are getting, the truck said I was getting 42 mpg but when I filled up, the amount miles I drove divided by gas I used was 38 mpg.

Yes the truck can drive on electric only, ICE only "hybrid", or both "hybrid" but showing some blue bar on the white bar. The electric motors don't have ton of power though- and the battery is only 1kWh battery compared to most EVs have 50+kWh batteries.

You can correct that in the settings.
