On the Facebook group "Ford Maverick Owners (2022+)" there is a report from multiple people that their Maverick is turning on in Reverse, meaning that the dial indicates it is in Reverse and you can't do anything (can't start it) until you put it into park. Some report this only shows on the dial and some say it also shows on the display. It has been mostly reported on Ecoboost but at least one report on a Hybrid. The first report is on a First Edition and others are on older models (made in 2022). Most reports indicate it happening 2 or 3 times so far. The Hybrid user reports it happening 10-15 times and it "bouncing back into revers upon shifting to park about a 100 times".

I suspect this is a reverse mechanism sensor problem. It could also be a problem with the dial. I guess it could also be some kind of spurious signal on the CAN bus that it reads as being in reverse or told to go into reverse on start up.

Does anyone know exactly how the reverse mechanism is detected?

lol wut? Oh man... this is nuts. I need to see a video of it happening though.
Sounds like it could be that they turned it off in R

It should switch to P the moment you turn it off, though. It shouldn't remember the last state.

I'm guessing this is a glitch in the computer since all of these controls are just inputs and nothing is connected to a transmission through linkage.

I haven’t ever seen the truck showing in R when I first get in. I HAVE turned the key off before with the truck in R a couple times and it’s has switched itself to P when I’ve done that.

Yeah, ain't that neat? When you reach your destination all you gotta do is turn off the key.

I was talking in person yesterday to original poster on FB. She claims it is placed manually in park before removing from ready state (it is an EB) and before turning off verified that gear selected light shows "park". It only happens occasionally and is not reproducible by operator at startup. Did not think at time to verify when talking to her that foot was firmly on brake when key turned (if that would matter or not?) Though I would expect at least it would not start engine and possibly gear selector is placed in reverse to get drivers attention. I have hybrid so I cannot test this out.

After the 1st time I'd be taking it in, not allowing it to go on 15 more times. And I'd definitely start recording everytime I turn the truck on for proof.

I definitely would when it becomes consistent

Ah I did not know it auto turned to P, now the glitch part makes sense
