I am ordering an XLT Maverick but am afraid if something changes in my life financially I may need to cancel. Would the dealer hold me to it legally or just sell it on the lot?

Pre qualify for a loan via a credit union and start making payments into a savings account now

Its moreso I may upgrade my house instead if I get a house for a decent price. So socking money away wont help, I just cant afford both.

House is an appreciating asset typically, a vehicle is a depreciating asset. Get a cheap rollscanardly and get your house fixed, buy a Maverick or whatever later. Start making payments into savings and buy your vehicles with cash or equivalent financing.
But cancel your order before it becomes part of the production queue

No. They’ll let you walk away and sell it to someone else.

I asked my dealer if I was obligated to buy the truck if I didn't like it when I finally got to drive it. He said they wouldn’t force anyone to buy a car that they didn’t want. Plus they could sell it themselves at a much better margin anyway.

With the demand of any new vehicle is in this economy I bet they wont hold you to it at all. We are in a sellers market right now. Not a buyers market. They will just keep it on the lot, mark it up maybe 25% and sell it on the lot quicker than it takes a laxative to kick in. I wouldnt worry too much.

As long as you didn’t put any money down, you’re not in any way obligated to purchase.

BUT

The general feeling in this forum is that if you’re not 100% sure you’ll take delivery, you should cancel the order, cuz they get pissy about the prospect of potentially having their own order marginally delayed because of it.

I think it’s silly. 25-30k is a decent chunk of change to commit to when you don’t have a solid timeframe, no one has seen the car and the manufacturer doesn’t require it. So don’t be misled by answers from folks who are coming from a “self preservation POV”.

The only complaint I’ve seen with regards to this is if people order multiple vehicles with the intent to purchase only 1 bc they don’t know what they want.
If you’re ordering a truck and you hate it upon arrival so be it. Walk with a clear conscience.
If you had the vehicle drop shipped from another dealership just anticipate you won’t be getting that deposit back as it’ll be applied to the cost of shipping the truck back.

Most states that would be illegal. Deposits are fully refundable. Plus, the cd would likely take it as stock.

that does not mean I OK such behaviour I think the advice to not cancel an order is ethically challenged.

The courtesy delivery dealer doesn't own the truck; the one you ordered it via does. So it needs to be shipped back to them and they keep the deposit for that cost. That's what Chapman was offering until people complained about that entirely reasonable policy so they stopped doing drop ship orders.

I am aware of this, on several levels, I am also aware that if the CD wanted it, and believe they would, they would xfer it to the CD and utilize internal procedure to balance the books. Aka Bill them. Just like I am not paying my CD at all, Tom is handling everything. My CD charge will be a line item.

all that being said: we will be taking delivery unless there is some very strong reason to reject is, as in visible damage, being a lime green pinto instead of what we ordered etc, because we are standing behind our foundation as much as Tom is standing behind his dealership. I expect no shenanigan from this deal at all @Dealerinsider is standup and forthright.

now he may contradict the xfer belief, but again being able to reject a vehicle that you contracted for and having it be ethically morally right are two very different things.
