Hello, all,

Buying a Maverick is going to be doubly exciting for me because it will be the first new car I ever buy, and at age 30, it wll be the first time I own a car that hasn't been on the road longer than me! (Currently driving a 2005 Rav4) As someone who is TOTALLY new to the dealership process (bought my old cars with cash from private parties), I have no clue how this works. I've been contacted by my local Ford dealer and they said they would get back to me when they had more information. I know they have my name on a waiting list, but they have not contacted me further about speccing out my order, and it sounds like some of you are A LOT farther along in the process. Are the any steps I should take right now? Also, general tips for new car buying are appreciated!

Make sure they don’t charge you dealer fees. Also remember you can say “No.” and go to another dealer. A local dealer wanted $2,500 as dealer fee on top of $500 deposit. I just left my dealer, only did $500 deposit. Took me about 1 hour because of configurations(making sure everything was exactly what I wanted) going over the price as well as a quote for my trade in vehicle. My dealer was very nice and I’m looking forward to the car getting here.

In the case of a new model like the Maverick, there won't be much to negotiate. You won't see much, if any, discount off MSRP. Just make sure they don't add a bunch of fees. The price of the vehicle, a reasonable doc fee ($250 in Ohio), the cost to transfer the title and taxes will be about it. In addition to the Maverick being a new model, this is not a great time to buy a new vehicle as supply is short and deals are few due to the chip shortage and pandemic.

1) MSRP is your starting point. Don't buy from a dealer wanting you to pay a premium above that.
2) Check dealerrater.com to see what others think of your local dealership
3) Bring "your deal" home and ask for others input on the message board. Plenty of knowledgeable folks on this site.

#1 rule...understand that the dealer is in business to make money. Doesn't mean the relationship has to be adversarial or the dealer is untrustworthy...but realize that he/she does not necessarily have YOUR best interests in mind.

I was wondering about negotiation. Seems like pre-ordering a brand new car with nothing else like it on the market (except the also new Santa Cruz) would put me at a disadvantage, and this is something I'm not good at anyway. Thanks for the advice!

If you are trading the Rav4, check Kelley Blue Book. Used car values are high. My 2017 Subaru Impreza was worth $13,200 two months ago, sold it to the dealer for $17,500.
