My needs are sporadic so I'd prefer not to drop $1000 on something I'd use 2-3 x's a year.
Has anyone found a decent unversal rack for the roof?

I'm looking to throw on of those clamshell deals up there for vacation.

Thanks

If you want "budget budget", build a wood, PVC, or black iron pipe framework that sits in the bed and allows you to mount the clamshell to it above the bed. Just strap down the frame to the bed hooks on the floor of the bed. Could even make it so you could take it apart for easy storage.

I've thought about the same, but Harbor Freight has a bed rack for around $230, that can be cut down shorter that could take a clam shell storage box on top of the rack. After experimenting, the roof top clam shell will take a big hit on MPG, verses having one attacked to a bed rack that would have little effect on MPG.

He said he was looking for a ROOF rack not a bed rack.

it's cool, options are always good. I'm limited thought with the hard trifold cover back there.

All of the roof racks would likely clamp in the doors. Those are hit and miss- they made lots of different size brackets for different window shapes when I bought a roof rack for my 1991 Taurus (LOL). Even then you sometimes get a little wind or water that can leak in.

I would totally prefer the "above bed" options- or the hitch mount carrier.

What I would like to see are budget/DIY crossbars for the bed that work with a closed tonneau cover so I can put the clamshell on top, but still utilize the bed. I've been looking at the Elevate rail system (https://truxedo.com/elevate-ts-rails/2022/ford/maverick), but I don't want the tall rack system. Looking for something cheaper and easier to remove.

I forget, does the Mav have slots to insert vertical bed poles in the sides?

Same hear, have the Gator TriFold. There are tonneaus that allow bed racks, but a lot more expensive. But I'm a little afraid of roof top tie down points + MPG. I have a 5,700 mile trip in the works and am using three 60 liter drybags in the bed & back seat for storage, still keeping my Tri-Fold Tonneau on the bed for rain protection.
