Loaner for recalls

I just took my hybrid in for the under hood fire recall. Was given a loaner. Then was told that the airbag recall Ford does not provide a loaner ? What? That makes no sense

Makes sense if the allotted work time for them to do the recall is short for one recall and long for the other recall. Say 1 hour versus 4 hours. Just made up numbers, but you get the idea.

The letter you should've received in the mail about the recall tells you if a rental will be provided under the recall. Many recalls do not provide payment specifically for rentals.

If the recall itself does not provide one, that's essentially left up to the goodwill of the dealer to provide one. Ford does have some programs available but these are limited in scope.

It's possible that the fire hazard recall loaner was not paid for by the recall program, but rather as a gesture from the dealer.

Except it's the other way around. The fire recall modifications are some 0.4 hrs labor. The airbag replacement recall 2 hours.

Although looking at the NHTSA one of the recent dealer communications on the fire recall covers rental preapproval:

Perhaps because at this time Ford is/was trying to prioritize un-delivered inventory and owners with units in operation haven't been instructed that parts are available to begin the recall campaign.

My dealer told me loaners were only guaranteed if I purchased an extended warranty. Which I did not.

My Mav was at the dealer for 2 months and it took 1 week for them to secure me a blue Ecosport loaner that only got 22mpg.

I checked the airbag recall details. It is true, Ford has not approved loaners for the program.
That doesn't mean that a dealer can't give you one, but Ford won't pay them to do so. So, it is unlikely you'll be able to get one.

Why? My only guess is that the underhood fire recall was a safety recall, and the airbag recall is a compliance recall. Perhaps the threshold for Ford paying for a loaner is different under these different recall types?

If you purchase a Ford extended service plan that includes a loaner, that plan will pay for a loaner in other circumstances too (like a recall).

This started in "supplement 2" of the FSA:
Dealers are pre-approved for up to one day for a comparable rental vehicle (no SSSC contact
required).

There still has to be an available loaner. And if an outside rental company is used and not a dealer-owner loaner, the amount that Ford will pay (generally $40) may not cover all the rental bill.

At least that $40 goes toward the negotiated rate which is generally less than if you were to go rent a vehicle yourself. These days, though, everything is more expensive and the amount Ford, your insurance, etc. pays hasn't really gone up. So, it's still not going to go very far..
