This guy has vinyl wrap over the hood and the side panel
That's get you an idea, vinyl is cheaper than painting

Vinyl wrap requires a perfect surface , so you'd still have to pay for sanding, priming & painting. The only savings would be on color match/blending.

Obviously, vandalism. Looks like a box cutter. They had to try to get 3 panels.

I've done a lot of body work on antique classics and most any body shop would use a filler (a good quality type of Bondo) to remove the scratch, then paint & clear coat. But all 3 sections with the scratch will have to be light sanded down and prepped. The hassle on this type of scratch is taking off some plastic parts (window trim, truck bed, etc. and covering the rest of the truck from getting paint overspray. I just had to have my rear fender painted...with a significant dent and it was only $950. I'd look for a local independent shop, dealers would mark the job up 30% and I'd ask that they not report it as an accident on CarFax records (mine didn't report it). Hopefully your deductible on insurance is not too high. In my area that's a $1,400 to $1,900 job.

So my ruby red metallic lariat got keyed the other day. Took it in to see about repair. Was quoted over $3k. Anyone have experience with this?

Yes. Had a 2019 Mustang that got keyed in VA. It cost around $2000 back then. It was the passenger door and front passenger fender. The color was Royal Crimson. Loved that car.

Have not been keyed, but did also have to deal with damage to a parked vehicle with one of my previous cars. Filed a police report and contacted insurance. Was considered a comprehensive claim, not collision, so my rates weren't hiked. Just had to pay my $100 deductible and insurance covered the rest. It was in 2020 and cost about $1000 total.

If I were you I'd file a police report, contact insurance to file a claim, then take it to a highly-regarded body shop in your area.

Yeah. That's the plan. I was hoping just some touch up pen and getting it resealed would be sufficient. Crazy they can't just match up the paint enough going down the scratch VS repainting half the car.

Yeah, it does suck, but can tell you from experience if they just only follow down the scratch, you'll still always notice the repair no matter how close they can match the paint. Especially with it being metallic. The better option is to take it out to existing body lines and other panels for proper blending, as that will eliminate any visual cues to the fact that the paint won't exactly match.

Paint isn't cheap any more, the bodyshop that repaired my hail damage said that anytime a panel needs to be painted it's a minimum of $1000 these days and especially with all the metallic colors. He was telling me that some paints cost hundreds of dollars a liter, not sure if he was exaggerating but he didn't have any reason to brag to me, I wasn't footing the bill.

Some metallic paint is expensive. But I bought a pint of Ford Velocity Blue paint last week and it was $55 pint, a pint of clear coat was just a little cheaper.

How did it match with the original color?

Exact match since I bought paint from Ford. You'd never be able to tell which fender was painted...most modern paint takes several years (depending on color) before it starts sun fading. I did a good job on rear fender dent. ($950 labor and material by a local independent body shop.)

Mav hood is aluminum but seems most body panels are steel; fortunately, the rear bed fender and tailgate is steel...so a powerful magnet saves time and money for body shops. Clear coating adds to the cost of body damage.

The only aluminum panel on a Maverick is the hood.

My 2019 F-150 was Velocity Blue IIRC and when a Deer hit My truck and My buddy fixed it that has His own Body Shop. IIRC he said the Pearl Tint or something like that is needed for Velocity Blue was very expensive.
