Simple speeding is low hanging fruit for police and highway patrol. Setup some automated stations on a stretch of highway that time when cars enter and exit and calculate the average speed between the two points, and mail a ticket out based on the license plate.

I'd MUCH prefer that traffic enforcement target unsafe drivers and I really don't care if someone is speeding as long as they're driving with due regard for other people on the road. That requires actual staffing on the roads and police actually paying attention to what's happening instead of just waiting for a ping from the devices.

there was a proposal in the recent legislature to authorize them, at least in metropolitan Las Vegas. I *think* it's dead.

The protection used to be stronger than now: it used to be the case that out of state agencies requesting info from the DMV had to include an affidavit that it wasn't being used for a camera ticket!
The only problem with that is. The law states that a law enforcement officer has to visually see the infraction.

I parked on the side of the street and it measured 18 inches from the curb. The ordinance is 12. A cop saw me do it. I corrected it and still hiding in the basement for the better half of the day waiting for a knock on my door.

yes aluminum foil is reflective to a lot of things. 5G dont get me started.

My 2022 Maverick prompted data sharing in FordPass. I disabled vehicle data and location in the app and truck settings. From my experience, cops don’t have a live feed, they’d need a warrant or OEM cooperation. The only telemetry I’ve seen shared was when I tried an insurer plugin that logged speeding and hard brakes, so I ditched it. I keep Bluetooth for audio, no OBD dongles. Only time I flip location back on is when I travel and want event options, grabbed rugby seats via https://www.seatpin.com/six-nations-tournament-tickets. Smooth purchase without much extra data beyond payment.

it varies from state to state, with one or the other of those compromising most.

CA and NV are split on that, iirc, but I couldn't tell you which is which.

yes, but viewing on camera can be sufficient.

The house of cards started collapsing when transcripts of city council meetings discussing how much extra revenue could be extracted by shortening yellow lights came to light. The courts were not impressed!

And in AZ, 15-20 yers ago, it was Sherrif's leading the charge to ban the traffic cameras, as they were increasing accidents with the hard braking they triggered!

(although I would really like to see some red light enforcement in las vegas. When I'm out of state, I can actually slow down when the light turns yellow without checking the rear view to make sure that noone behind me is accelerating for it!0

Dochawk,
Viewing it on a camera in current time or viewing video from a traffic camera?
We're talking about Nevada laws.

generally, it's not a state law matter, but federal due process restrictions that strike these down.

It's been a while, but I *think* you need a contemporary witness to view and authenticate, and a LEO to exercise the discretion as to whether or not to issue. These could be the same person, or the LEO could come later. [but don't hold me to this; general legal principles get me there {yes, I am a Nevada lawyer, but this isn't legal advice!}]

A picture or video is not evidence in and off itself. Rather, it is used to illustrate the witnesses testimony. So if the witness didn't see it, there is generally no testimony there.

The company that basically got red light cameras banned was Australian, and the revenue generation was their whole marketing theme. At the same time there was another company, based in RI IIRC, that had a machine learning technology (common now but ahead of its time then) that tracked individual vehicles through the intersection area. It would predict when someone was about to run the red, and would hold the red in the other direction longer to prevent accidents. It also only kept the footage when a red light run happened, and an actual officer had to review the footage. Their technology was way better, and their whole marketing was about the safety benefits, and that their technology would reduce tickets. They sold almost no systems and promptly went bankrupt.

Earlier this year I was driving through a rural part of Virginia to visit my daughter which is known to have speed traps and got a ticket. The speed limit frequently changes from 35 to 55 etc. on this stretch of road. At the time, my wife’s iphone was connected by wire and we were using google maps. I’m a bit of a “hyper-miler” and try not to lose momentum, but usually don’t go above 10 mph over the speed limit. I was driving for 10 - 15 minutes past where I supposedly was speeding when the cop pulled me over. It got me thinking about my location and speed data being sent to the officer. Does anyone know if this data is being sent? I know there’s GPS signal at least being received because I can see my direction (NE, SW etc.) on the dash when driving. If so, is there a way to turn off data transfer to the po-po without voiding the warranty?
There is no way local enforcement officers can read your info being transmitted and use it against you. All they have to do is set up speed traps, use radar, and have you pass through with an out of state license plate. Virginia in known for this. Most, just send in the fine, then to return to try to fight it. Just my personal opinion.

You are correct. Drive north on I-95 and cross into Virginia. Greenville county sheriff loves out of state plates. The key is they look for NO front plate and if you are over the limit you will get stopped. Saw it every morning driving south to work for 4 years.
That's exactly the area they got me. As soon as I went over the hill, (after passing a row of trucks in the right lane) I saw the car with the radar as as I was on the downward side, and going over 80, It wasn't long before the flashing lights were behind me.

Many years ago the town I lived in had A police dog that would sign at cars exiting 20-35 mph off I40 that he smelled stuff.
