Clearly the NHTSA needs to mandate lug nut torque sensors. They've mandated everything else.

Let me add, in the confessional tone of this thread, that early in my driving life, I once put automatic transmission fluid in the oil filler tube late at night. Instant valve job.

Reminds me of the time I was in a hurry to finish my brake pads late in the evening and put them in backwards...on both front wheels.

Very nice sound it had when I went for a test drive.

Fun story. Buddy of mine did some sort of work on his Ranger and while heading to my house, all the lug nuts flew off one of his wheels. They went into an overgrown ditch and he couldn't find them, luckily the wheel didn't actually come off. This was before cell phones, he walked clear to my house, I wasn't there. He continued on and ended up walking half the town. Saw him the next day and he told me the story. I simply said "why didn't you just take a lug off each of the other wheels?". I thought he was going to kill me.

How? How do you expect them to be able to do that? The sensor package to detect the minute stretch of the stud, which indicates torque, would be too sensitive and expensive to slap in a wheel hub. Unless there is something I am missing.

I hope so.

Systems for what he wants do exist, just not in this situation.

On the fix, might I suggest a check list? We use them in diving religiously even though we go through the motion countless times.

Very surprised to see ford no longer uses cotter pins on their suspension??? Loctite blue and my new 200 ft lb wrench should do it... I was maxing out my old one at 150lbs doing the wheels @148

The lower control arm is a torques bit with a nut and the upper part of the spindle is just 2 bolts that go through the strut.

Holy shit I forgot to order a rotor from ford I didn't hear back from O'Reilly's thank you!

While I'm in there I might just do my calipers in a De1634 krylon black... The duplicolor high temp flavor

@MankDeems :
You quote " There is NOT ENOUGH SPACE TO KNOCK THE STUDS OUT THE BACK EVEN IF YOU BROKE JUST STUD 1 YOU HAVE TO PRESS THE HUB AND BEARING OUT MOST LIKELY DESTROYING JUST TO RELOAD STUDS! "

Dunno dude. Looks like there's room behind the marked stud below for the stud to be pressed out with the knuckle on the vehicle unless I'm missing something. I have yet to find a wheel hub where there isn't a single place to press out a stud.

Ford starting doing this about 10 years ago on many models like the later Escapes etc. It should have been STOPPED but there is no law restricting it. There is no reason why they could not have used serrated head bolts with a thin top head and a reemed groove in the knuckle just like all the other manufacturers. There was enough room for this mod but Ford is just cheap and cut corners on EVERYTHING. If you have tires installed MAKE sure to tell the installer that they HAVE TO HAND START every nut. IF they crossthread one it will cost you $$$ to repair.

If you feel a wobble STOP pull over even on the freeway where there is a shoulder. You could kill yourself or someone around. you got lucky if that had happened on the freeway with speed you could be in box or looking at a manslaughter charge. As you stated felt a wobble and kept going.

No shoulder otherwise I would have.
Once you're going 5 mi an hour it doesn't feel like anything can really go wrong Also I outlined how lucky I was heavily in my original post so?

In my early 20's, my first car, a 1969 Ford Galaxie 500 sedan, only six years old and paid $500 for it, just rotated the tires and on the drive to town and back, doing 55mph, went over a raised bridge and as I started to desend the other side, I noticed my driver's side front tire out in front of me. My car bounced on the road, I got it off on the shoulder, called my big brother who came and towed me home. My car had drum brakes all around it, so took a drum off a 'junk' car (same model Ford} parked back in our woods, put it on my car, and drove just 'fine' until I lent it to my little sister and she blew the engine.

The part diagram shows the spindle as a perfect circle disassembled too!

I will be making a YouTube video called Ford's push to a more anti consumer product once my repairs are completed.

Bonus fender gore...

I think it’s a pretty common design. I saw a parts diagram that has a number for the studs but it’s not listed as something you can order, I’m sure they want you to buy a whole hub and not replace individual studs. the ford dealer where I get parts from has the hub for $64, and the bearing kit for $63 NZ6Z1104A and NZ6Z1215A respectively.

I think that’s somewhat overstated. The parts to repair that would be $128.
