I agree, different caps for different chaps. I like the idea of having an extra large trunk that is secure. I also like the way the bed looks when it is covered. Options are as varied as simple vinyl covers to folding, roll up or even electrically retractable. In addition, there is nothing wrong with just having an open bed.In what way is it a pain?
A tonneau essentially turns a truck bed into a very large traditional trunk, protecting from the elements, from dirt/debris/leaves, from light stuff flying out, and from casual theft.
For example, I recently picked up relatives from the airport and we tossed their suitcases in the back. The tonneau didn't have to be touched. Since the bed was always covered since I last washed it, it was nice and clean and so their luggage stayed clean and didn't have pollen and other dirt in there, and it wasn't a problem that it was sprinkling outside or that we decided to stop by Fadis Mediterranean food on the way back because the suitcases were secure.
The only time you really have to fold up the tonneau is when you're hauling really tall items, which isn't too often.
Different tonneaus have different pros and cons. The soft tonneaus are the lightest and least expensive, but they are less theft proof and can take more time to get tight on the velcro if they are rollup type. Trifolds are heavier but more durable and theft resistant but folded up you lose rear visibility. Retracting hard tonneaus are super convenient but can need occasional maintenance and because they roll up into a box can rob about a foot of bed space retracted. Then there are hybrid tonneaus that you can either tri-fold up or completely remove quickly with quick-release lever, so all kinds of options. You can read about all the different types and decide what is for you, but the before-mentioned reasons is why they are nice.
