I am searching for the most OCD perfect nuts to use on my bronco sport wheels + winter tires (225/65R-17 Continental VikingContact 7 XL)

I bought these wheels

for a great price

They looked like an all black version of the

All of the wheel specs match identically except the fact the bronco sport uses a M12 lug. It's still an acorn lug.

I know these wheels have been put on a Maverick with the stock Maverick lug nuts (source)

I could be sane and rational and save myself $40 - 200 not buying lug nuts and use the factory lug nuts. However I have 3 problems.
1) ....not OCD... but ADD/ADHD hyper FIXATIONS
2) They're not black & it will probably look better with black lug nuts
3) The Maverick lug nuts contact the bronco sport wheel like this:

(source)

Is point 3 a problem? I am no rocket scientist, I'm a computer scientist + cyber security professional, but if I was on a game show to win the $1,000,000 I would say this is a non issue because the Maverick Lug nuts on the Maverick studs DO NOT BOTTOM OUT. You just have maybe 2mms less of a contact patch (lug nut on wheel seat/lug nut well. I'm not sure what you would call it. The area the lug nut needs to clamp.)

I bought these Eisen ones to try, however their finish is very poor, wear marks when they're 'new out of the box'. I might return them for poor quality. In the listings photos they looked better than the cheaper ones that had a lot of reviews saying they corroded.

Measuring them with a caliper they seem to have 1mm more surface to clamp to the wheel... however my measurements might not be super accurate & that 1mm might just be the black coating on them.

I'm 31, I've never made youtube videos nor home videos. It's just an activity//skill I've never practised. So I actually recommend you do not watch these videos. However if you want to follow along with me, when I tried to compare and measure I turned the camera on and pointed it at what I was working on.

I do not want to have a debate about if this should be done at all or not. It clearly has been done, it's clearly fine. 2mm less of a clamping surface//contact patch is not a problem when the lug nut is not bottoming out. Bottoming out a lug nut would be bad. That's not happening here. That's established.

TO BE EXTREMELY OVERTLY Clear (so no crazy debates start)
Because I am buying black lug nuts anyway for the looks.
Has anyone found (seen with their own eyes, had in their hand or measured with a caliper) a m14 lug nut (that's not an outie belly button, meaning it is not too tall & sticking out) that sits on the bronco sport wheel like this:

No, I have not found a lug nut that didn't stick out. After looking near and far I gave up and just deal with it. As a mechanical engineer I am more concerned with thread engagement than I am with contact in the conical seat. On an M14x1.5 lug nut I would like to see 14/1.5=9.3333, so minimum 9 complete turns of the lug nut for proper thread engagement.

Fantastic post, thank you.
What lug nuts are those? Can you provide a link or product name please?

I offer a possible solution. Use a regular old basic lug nut. You'll get the seat you need and the thread engagement you need. Ugly you say? Cover them with Color Lugs . You probably want black lug nuts. The problem is the finish will wear off where the wrench contacts the nut. Not really visible from 10 feet, but you'll see it. You won't have this problem with Color Lugs. They should stay nice looking for a long long time.

Thank you. Another great fantastic suggestion. I am still however on the search for that regular old basic m14 lug nut that will fully seat on the bronco sport wheels. Please link or post a product (the lug nuts) if you know of one.

Ford just released a set of the 18" Maverick BAP wheels that they are marketing for Bronco Sport:

https://performanceparts.ford.com/part/M-1007K-S187BSGB

It really stands to reason that if the wheels you got fit both a Bronco Sport and Maverick and Ford is marketing wheels that fit both, that they truly are interchangeable. Using the factory/factory style lugs should be a non-issue.

So, if you really want the most OEM-style black factory lugs, here they are straight from Ford:

https://performanceparts.ford.com/part/M-1012K-MB

If you want to go aftermarket, I think Gorilla is the closest you can get. Bonus, they are solid lugs (not capped like the OEM and FRPP), and they are a lot cheaper.

Part # 61148BCX

They are a little taller than stock, but I believe the best quality and closest to OEM in the aftermarket world.

Yes. It truly seems that way however the lug seats are sized differently for m12 vs m14. From what @EngineeredDetails said, it’s fine.

The ford ones… probably not worth $200 if they’re 2piece 🙄 & if they’re identical size that’s not what I’m looking for.

Maybe I’ll return the Amazon ones and get the Gorilla ones. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the brand. Hopefully their cone/seat area fit the bronco sport wheel better.

Have you been able to put a caliper up to one?

Universal lug nuts are made with an angled seat for a reason and they are manufactured to fit a very wide variety of wheels from different manufacturers. Not sure why people get stuck on the lug size when aftermarket wheels are not sized for lug dimensions, only bolt pattern, hub bore, etc. You also have Ford using the same exact wheel on both the Maverick and Bronco Sport without concern for lug size. You're overthinking it because one guy on here did something boneheaded and damaged his wheel while many have had zero issues. FWIW I am running Gorilla universal M14x1.5 lugs on my Bronco Sport wheels and have been for a year and a half and they still look amazing and my wheels haven't fallen off.

When measuring them myself they are exactly the same except for the seat by 2 mms. If I ever get to see an FX4 wheel or Tremor wheel in person I'll measure it with a caliper & play dough moulds vs my all black bronco sport wheel.

It's a good sign too, like you say "aftermarket wheels are not sized for lug dimensions, only bolt pattern, hub bore, etc." If it mattered they would be. Plus the fact... Nobody has had a wheel fall off yet.

My tires are getting mounted on these bronco sport wheels today 👍. I'm pretty sure I'll just use the black lug nuts I have.

Who damaged the wheel and how? I'm hoping I can learn and avoid doing that myself.

Another thing to consider is that the base of your lug nut where the tapered cone is at it's narrowest point is going to be very close to the diameter of the wheel lug itself. Now, take a bronco sport wheel on the hub without any of the lugnuts fastened on and wiggle it left to right etc, you will see that there is some wiggle room there meaning that the lug openings on the bronco sport wheels are larger than 14mm which also means that there is plenty of room for the taper to seat. I have even posted photos here of how 14x1.5 lugnuts seat in bronco sport wheels showing a perfect seat and no damage. Please don't take offense to this but this has been one of the more ridiculous discussions on this forum all erroneously started because of one individual using the wrong lug nuts and damaging his wheels.

Looking good, I’d like to do the same to my incoming XL. How did you manage to get such a good deal on the wheels? Which black lugs did you end up using?
Check this post for more details.

These lugnuts: Eisen M14 Black

Ford accessories had a 15% off fall sale plus I had A LOT of rewards points on a Ford credit card from buying everything for my house+life on it since April 2024 so I got a reasonable $451.11 on the wheels, Continental in August had rebates and instant discounts so I paid $319.90 on the tires. Plus $85something for the mount and balance.

I don't love the tires driving around on the street but they are safer when the temperature is lower than seven Celsius and they will be good for the snow. Plus the tires were so cheap I can't complain.
