I did read it, just noting my 2 cents. I have experienced this almost every morning like clock work, upstate NY has been consistently 20 degrees F or below since I took delivery. While city driving/hyper mileling the coolant temp barley stays at 1/4 on the gauge. Engine surging would only make sense to get the interior up to temp within the 15 minute maximum remote start time. However the odors have seem to go away for the most part

New vehicle odors are normal and guaranteed to happen.....and.....they can last for several weeks.

It happens because you are baking off a whole host of chemicals and coatings that are on new parts from the manufacturing process. Things like ductwork have a film from the plastic forming process. Heating components are the worst! They stink for awhile. That is why the smell is worse when heaters are running and the vehicle is at temperature.

For those with an Ecoboost motor, the occasional oil burning smell is normal, because that is what is happening in small quantities.

Edit: The rough idle is concerning a little and I don't suspect to be normal.

Add me to the list of hybrids that has the rough idle. I'm in Minnesota. Drive 45 mins to work parked the car for 5 mins in the parking lot and was rough idling. It seems to start the rough idle before it turns if the motor. If that makes sense. I have a lariat no lux package.

How long have you owned your truck? Has the rough idling occured more than once? Is it more prone to do this in below freezing temperatures? To you and others experiencing rough idling, are you popping the good to check on the status of your catalytic converter?

Thanks.

I had the same thing happen only 1 time using remote start, it was around 40 deg f it rattled loudly and surged for a few seconds , I turned it off right away. , I took my phone out to video it, but when I started it up again it ran normal. It doesn't get that cold too often but I am very concerned. I've never thought of ford as a reliable brand or much of a fan of their styling but since the price was right and the gas mileage was good, I took a gamble and bought my first ford ever. Time will tell If I should have gone with my instincts and stay away from ford.

I have had it about a month and have driven it less than 1000 miles (i had covid for a bit). It has done this many times with the key start. Its winter here in MA and has done it in 30 degree weather and less. Its not every time. In fact, the dealer has had it a few days and cant seem to replicate it... I'm not the most mechanically inclined, but I popped the hood and got underneath to see if there was anything glowing, leaking, or odd. I havent seen anything out of the ordinary.

Glad you are well despite the Covid.
One thing I did not see commented was your heater on max heat during this warm up fase?
And during the surging did you happen to look for the "red cat" phenomena . May be difficult to get on your knees and squat down and look.
At this point it is something we all have to live with until it is resolved by Ford or a home bru genius on this forum.

First of I dont yet have a maverick...but from what Ive seen in the videos, here is my take on what might be happening:

The engine is caught in its own sensor feedback loop.

Cold start ups on any car usually cause the ECU to increase the idle speed and enrich the fuel mixture. This is why any gas powered car exhaust smells more at first start and especially in the cold.
The glowing CAT is the result of excess/unburned fuel being burned in the CAT.

The engine senses cold temp, so it boosts fuel/idle,
idle speed & mixture gets too high, so it drops fuel/idle
Engine is still cold, so it repeats itself
Probably a faulty sensor or ECU mismanagement of sensor signals, could be any of the fuel/air management sensors

I have not seen a glowing CAT. I have had issues with both the blowers on max and with mild blowers. It hasnt happened in a week or so now. But this morning i got the strong rotten eggs/ sulfur smell without any other issues (that i could see).

Same thing happened to me. Full tank of gas and this isn't on remote start. I also got a bad odor yesterday morning and haven't had great mileage since. Bringing to the dealership tomorrow morning and will post info here.

This was shared on a different rough idle thread. Looks like it is not just Maverick Hybrids, it is Escape Hybrids as well...

Mar 1 2022 2022 Maverick, 2020-2022 Escape – 2.5L FHEV – Idle Surge And/Or Rough Idle WithHigh Temperature In The Catalytic Convertor And Sulfur Odor In The Cab
Some 2022 Maverick and 2020-2022 Escape vehicles equipped with a 2.5L full hybrid electric vehicle (FHEV) powertrain may exhibit an idle surge and/or rough idle with high temperature in the catalytic convertor and sulfur odor in the cab. This may be due to the software installed in the powertrain control module (PCM).This condition does not affect vehicle durability and no additional diagnosis or service is required for this condition at this time. Inform customers that they can continue to drive the vehicle and engineering is currently developing a software update that is expected in the last week of March 2022. Once the softwareupdate is available, contact the customer and schedule a follow-up appointment for repair.
